Struggling to dicide on main class

Hi I am planning on Playing FFxiv again but would like some advice on picking a class as when I previously played I could not Pick one to stick with . I tried to level every class at once and burned out.

I am coming from WOW/SWTOR ect and tend to gravitate towards Proc based Melee classes Mop Ret paladins / Fury warrior , Experimental prototype Powertech Bounty Hunter .

Q1 Are there any Proc Based Melee classes

Q2 if not what would be a ranged alternative

Any help would be appreciated as it may stop me flailing around and getting burned out before I get anywhere again.

Ps posting on a lv 1 as I can't seem to find my account details from when I last played but guessed my details from when I played in 2013.

    My best advice will be
    Try them all

Unlike wow your character can be anything whenever you want

So try them and see which one you like the most

    ...

Anyway i would say dragoon for a kinda simili proc melee
Otherwise mch and bard as range one
Blck mage can do also in term of proc based class

Technically all classes especially melee are proc based since they all have combos.
I know the dragoon class the best but playing other classes they all seem to have combos to go along with them, ranged classes as well.

    Tip for you:
Play palace of the dead once you reach lvl 17. You can play each job up to lvl 60 in a few hours, and you can see if you like them or not. You won't be able to unlock the job skills, but you can at least see if you enjoy how the class plays.

Im with Nekotee and Britton on this one. When i read your question my first three thoughts were dragoon, bard, and black mage. Black mage takes the longest to get there(you get their proc traits at 28 and 44), but i think its procs are the strongest(0 mana instant cast enhanced thunder 3/0 mana instant cast fire 3). And for the record, BLM still does good damage at those times when the procs arent cooperating with you and just dont want to happen. I dont personally play dragoon or bard, so i cant comment as much on those.

Palace of the dead is a brand new piece of content found in quarrymill, it is a 50 floor roguelike dungeon and everyone starts at level 1 on the first floor, and it has its own independent levelling system, so you can level to top level in a short period of time and see how the job will play at max level. I did this with my lvl 35 BLM to see what it was like at lvl 60

It's a multi-floor dungeon with randomly generated floors.
It has a separate leveling system then the game, so you can get up to level 60 and get abilities that are gained via quests to try out a job before you actually max it out in the open world. You have to have the job unlocked to get any of its abilities though (like Arcanist will need either Summoner or Scholar unlocked to get their quest-gained abilities).

As for your OP, like everyone else said, all the melee classes (even tanks) are combo-based (1 > 2 > 3).

Lancer/Dragoon are the standard Vanilla Single-Target Melee with some positionals thrown in.

Pugilist/Monk have "Form" attached to their combos, going from one form to the next with every weapon skill used and gaining a buff called Greased Lightning when they go through one combo. Most of their weapon skill have a form assigned to it, so you can mix and match different ones.

Rogue/Ninja have a little more branching off from their combos and have a bit more off-cooldown abilities to use in between combos. They are also a little more utility-based then the other Melee.

    As for the Ranged jobs:

Archer/Bard don't have combos and rely on getting procs from traits to do more damage. They focus more on weaving off-global cooldown abilities and DoTs and are primary seen as a support job do to their songs.

Machinist have a combo like melee but it is RNG-based, with a 50% chance of getting the next weaponskill's proc. You can control this by using Reload or Quick Reload to get ammunition that will automatically give you the proc. This also makes their optimum rotation different then the rests, going 1 > 2 > 1 > 3 IF you get all the procs or have enough ammunition. Like Archer/ Bard, they are seen more as a supportive job (but not as much as Bard).

The Quest for Palace of the Dead starts in New Gridania at the Adventures Guild, Quarrymill is basically just the hub point as it is currently not in duty finder.
I do agree that it would be a great place to see all abilities without having had levelled the class/job and you do get some exp from it.
Since you first asked about melee, dragoon may be for you.
