In some games I use a program called "joy2key" that makes the controller emulate keyboard strokes. I'm not sure if its better or worse than what you're already using though.

I use a 3rd party wired ps3 controller made by rock candy. I Chose it because the D pad an analog positions are switched, making it easier to operate the D pad with my right hand if I want to continue moving.

The game seems to pick up my controller fine (no need for any software addons). I had problems when I used to use a bluetooth controller, usually the controller randomly losing its input signals and then reconnecting.
