Everyone subbed NIN to dual wield and use shadows.
sorry what does that mean? subbed nin and used shadows?
Final FANTASY XI had subjobs. This meant that you could set a second job and have access to its abilities and traits. The subjob, however, was limited to half of your main job's current level.
For example, a level 60 Red Mage could sub Ninja and have access to all Ninja abilities and traits up to level 30. Ninja could dual wield and was able to cast Utsusemi, which was a buff that cast shadows and would absorb a number of hits. It was useful for solo play, and the reason why Ninja became a tank job.

In XI you had your main job and a sub job. The sub job gave your main job the stat boosts and abilities/spells/traits up to the level of that sub job which was capped at half your main job's level. Nin = Ninja. Ninja had the dual wield trait and shadows were from a ninjutsu called utsusemi. Utsusemi has multiple tiers but essentially it absorbed x number of single target hits. Completely mitigating the damage. This coupled with RDM's fast cast trait made it the go to sub job for soloing.
Sick! thanks for the info guys!
A little off topic so I apologize but I soooooo miss the customization of ffxi subjobs. Would've been awesome in a game where you could solo like this one. Beastmaster/ninja was incredibly fun and incredibly scary.
