Gearing Up!

Finishing the main story quest will be your first goal. It's a large chunk of the game and the expansion and will get you to 50/60 respectively on a job. As Yona87 said, the ilvl 120 ironworks gear you can acquire in Mor Dhona for tomes will be your first goal before hitting the Heavensward content, those can last you until about level ~55 in the expansion areas.

Most important thing is to find what's fun for you and have fun. For me personally it was the story (except for fetch quests with no actual impact. Bloody moogles.) and dialogue in quests. Love the gameplay, but not enough to grind constantly for endgame gear. I say that having gotten 2 characters through story (well, the 2nd still needs 3.3 content done but yeah). I try to do at least a trial roulette a day for quick easy tomes, still don't do it every day. I haven't done a run through a dungeon since after I beat the 3.3 content...
