So after a very long time of inactivity I came back to the game with the free 5 day sub promotion and have taken an interest in actively playing. I am currently in basic level 50 gear and just wanted some general gearing suggestions. All help is very much appreciated.

Well the easiest way is clearly to do the main story and get some stuff during your dungeons runs'

if you don't have the HW expansion at level 50 your best bet for gear is Ironworks gear Ilv120 (purchased in Mor dhona) and the gear drops from the Crystal towers. If you do have HW, the gear you can buy in falcons next once you reach ishgard is gonna be the first thing you want to mix and match with your ironworks gear, then its on to mixed n match parts of the ishgardian banner sets that drop in Dusk Vigil, then on to sohm al, aery, vault, and end game. So until lvl 60 its pretty linerar. tanks ur gonna focus vitality, goon is str and crit/skill speed, ninja ( I dunno), bard (dex, acc and crit) so on n so forth.

Do you have the expansion?
If you do, try to get the ilvl 120 ironworks weapon (look up the requirements online).
Then start doing your main storyline and dungeons.

Finishing the main story quest will be your first goal. It's a large chunk of the game and the expansion and will get you to 50/60 respectively on a job. As Yona87 said, the ilvl 120 ironworks gear you can acquire in Mor Dhona for tomes will be your first goal before hitting the Heavensward content, those can last you until about level ~55 in the expansion areas.

Most important thing is to find what's fun for you and have fun. For me personally it was the story (except for fetch quests with no actual impact. Bloody moogles.) and dialogue in quests. Love the gameplay, but not enough to grind constantly for endgame gear. I say that having gotten 2 characters through story (well, the 2nd still needs 3.3 content done but yeah). I try to do at least a trial roulette a day for quick easy tomes, still don't do it every day. I haven't done a run through a dungeon since after I beat the 3.3 content...
