STEP one, allow for the left/right option to target and cycle through enemies ONLY on those sides. (Aka if its' left of you, pushing right wont eventually cycle to it.)
STEP 2 (the BIGGEST one)
When your weapon is out, Left and right target enemies ONLY and up/down ONLY cycle through PT members.
when the weapon is put away, left and right target 'all'.
Actually, how do I set up Targeting A's filter? I tried clicking on it, and nothing. Is there a text command?
Wish there was a quick way to adjust the filter of A w/o clicking. (Similar to how I suggested active/passive mode.)
Also, short explanations of each shoulda been in the UI.
I can't change filter mode for target when I use /targetmode a either. Was why I stick to mode B.
It's hidden on the controller. You have to press Auto Run button and then one of the face buttons to set it to one of the filters.) It's pretty handy, but you have to know where to look.Actually, how do I set up Targeting A's filter? I tried clicking on it, and nothing. Is there a text command?

you can set target filter under: Main Menu > Config > Targeting
or i think you just type /targetmode A , or /tagertmode b ect ect
No, I mean, once I AM on Target Mode A, how do I change the filter, so it is not always ALL?
If I can't change the FILTER of Target Mode A, then it is no different than C.
(Which I assumed was the idea.)
Target Mode A can only change filters for gamepad users. Why? No clue, but that's how it works.
The targeting modes (for gamepad users) as they are, are pretty great. I dunno, I don't have any trouble targeting and changing filters easily on the run. Then again Target Mode A is amazing on a gamepad lol.
I'm playing with a gamepad and I still hate sooooo much targeting system cause it doesnt care of the distance between u and w/e u're trying to targetTarget Mode A can only change filters for gamepad users. Why? No clue, but that's how it works.

Which button does it, because i AM playing with a gamepad, and no button seems to have any effect on it.Target Mode A can only change filters for gamepad users. Why? No clue, but that's how it works.

The buttons for changing target filters were hidden in the patch notes for 1.17a and for some reason never added to all the tutorial information on the Lodestone or explained anywhere in-game. To change filters, hold down the button you've assigned to auto-run and then press one of the following depending on which filter you want:
All: Emote List/Stack Battle Commands button
Friendly: Main Menu button
Party: Cancel button
Enemy: Select/Confirm button
It took me a while to find this information when I was having major targeting issues, so I feel your pain
I've found that using Target Mode A with the Enemy filter on really helps me target things more easily when I'm in a party, since I have easy access to both enemy-exclusive targeting and party member targeting. However, when I have my filter set to All, it's an entirely different story. It drives me crazy when I'm in town trying to target an NPC right in front of my character's face, with no other characters in my line of vision, and when I press enter/confirm it will target some random PC standing off to the side instead. Trying to select my Lalafell retainer in the Market Wards is a bit of a nightmare, and I've found that for some asinine reason trying to tab through targets will entirely skip her when I'm going one direction (i.e. left to right) but will randomly decide to target her when I go about it the opposite way (right to left).
Targeting priorities are totally screwed up right now, and the addition of targeting modes and filters is only masking the underlying problem in party situations. Even then I'll still run into times where I select an enemy far out of range instead of the one right next to me, and with how fast party battles can be this can sometimes result in me not even engaging until the party target is practically dead.
Targeting in FFXI was by no means perfect, but if they had copied its priorities and added the modes and filters on top, I would personally be a very happy camper. As is, targeting has become a constant source of frustration when it should be something players don't even have to think about.
The scrolling of the target cursor through your party list, in modes A or C, also has a huge flaw. If a party member on the list is either out of range to be targeted, or dead, the cursor will get stuck if you try to scroll past them by pressing either down or up. If you press down or up several times you can usually get it to budge, but needing to do such a thing is incredibly silly. Here's a crude example of what I mean:
Member A <- put target cursor here for now
Member B
Member C
Let's suppose Member B dies suddenly due to unforeseen circumstances.
Member A <- target cursor
Member B <- dead
Member C
As the healer, I see Member C's HP drop a bit, or perhaps a buff needs to be reapplied, so I attempt to scroll down but I can't do that because Member B is dead, so the cursor is stuck on Member A, thus it cannot go down from there. Granted I could press up instead to bring the cursor right to the bottom and onto Member C, but I don't see why the whole "stuck" thing needs to exist. Not to mention this is a simplistic example, in situations where multiple party members are either out of range or dead, it's absolute carnage.
Member A
Member B <- cursor here
Member C <- dead
Member D
Member E <- out of range
Member F
In a situation like this one, targeting Member D in time can be an absolute nightmare. I cannot get to them anytime soon by pressing either down or up as the dead/out of range members, C and E, are blocking the cursor from advancing. It's hair pulling, I tell you.
I appreciate what measures the dev team has taken to provide temporary alleviation to the horrendous targeting system and algorithms, until such a time when the UI is fully overhauled and we have a targeting system that actually makes sense (2.0 plz hurry), but this is a highly annoying issue that will frustrate healers everywhere. Please make it possible to either target dead members or, preferably, skip dead/out of range members on the list so the next member on the list can be targeted instantly. If FFXI can do it, I see no excuse for this.
Plz to adjust, misery loves company. m-~.~-m
yes pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee i hate the actual targeting system! ='(
