    I don't get why you want left or right targeting when you can have a list of engaged mobs on a list to choose from.

    You seem to not be aware of the fact we already have a list of targets.
    What's the difference between a list on your screen where you move up/down to select one (or click on it) and pressing left/right (or click on a mob)? It's merely a different representation.

    As for a "physical list", how do you imagine it would work? Something like being sorted from nearest to farthest, right?

    This is exactly what this thread is about.
    Not about filtering.
    Not about which keypress makes you cycle though a list.

    heres whats happening from me

    On mode A using my D-pad I start cycling to the right and it starts with whatever target happens to be in the center of my view. So if I have the center of my camera pointed at someone 100 yalms out it will start at that target because it always starts at the center before it allows you to cycle to the right. same happens when I cycle to the left. However since I have Direct targeting toggled "on" whenever I press X which is my Accept/Confirm button it targets whoever is close to me regardless of camera position. Seriously I was targeting in combat and out of combat, in uldah and in a highly mob populated part of La noscra. When you begin to cycle using keys or buttons it always starts with the center of the camera, consider this perhaps there is an invisible cross hair that may be conflicting with the targeting system but it works 100% of the time.

    Try it, go to ul'dah and point the center of your camera on someone far away you will target them first, then cancel target and point the center at someone else. thats how regular targeting works.

    Also some notes:

    If 2 or more targets share the center right (which is cycle next) will highlight the first target slightly to the right regardless of distance, Left (which is cycle previous) will do the same regardless of distance.

    Pressing X to get the closest first target to your character (again with Direct Targeting ON) will do the con shape with precedence over targeting that you describe, however normal targeting will highlight whoever is at the center on your camera regardless of distance from your character.

    so thats

    X or [Accept/Confirm] with "Direct Targeting" ON --- Cares about who is the closest to your character (This will allow accurate target cycling from a con shape starting at the first target depending on Left or Right key presses)

    Mode A [All] Normal Cycling [Left:Previous / Right: Next] --- Cares about who is in the center of your screen/camera regardless of distance. (This also allows for accurate targeting if the target you want is at an obscure distance while ignoring whether the target is close or far)

    ----
    Both can be used in conjunction during certain situations and honestly now that I know this from doing further research I have complete personal control over the targeting system and will now speed up my switching and selecting with the D-Pad immensely.

    Nope a list is far better than scrolling left or right. It would be way faster, mobs seem to have letters attached to their names, so targeting Marmot D would be faster than cycling thru them. So when you need to kill marmot D you can quickly find him on the list of mobs instead of staring at the screen trying to find its name when its covered up by something else.

    Also a list is way faster, and where is this list of mobs we have in game now that shows what we are fighting?

    From what you say, i assume you'd mean something like this?

    http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/623/targetwindow.jpg

    Forgive me if its a little messy. Basic structure is;
    Coeurl A above list = Current target
    Red = Engaged target
    Blue = Moused over
    Green = Targeting you

    Although i feel like the tab targeting has to be sorted out properly, i do think that having something like this (as an optional toggle) would benefit some people. Its true that its a bit of a UI hog, although im sure SE can do a better job with the real thing than i can with photoshop lol, but for battles with lots of enemies i think it would save some frustration.

    Yes that right there would be great. The list shows up and you can target the names on the list by pressing left or right on a controller or tab on a KB only set up. The problem with left or right targeting only the distance is measured by the camera. I have had this happen many times when i am standing right in front of a mob and it wont target them at all.

    FF XI targeting was pretty shit also but it didn't matter cause you usually only fought 1 mob at a time.

    Yeah, because it's implemented that way. It is not tied to the representation of the list but the implementation of sorting it. This is what I am trying to tell you all this time.

    I feel like I'm talking to a wall. Tell me the difference between:

    Marmot A <> Ixali B <> Marmot B <> Wolf A <> Ixali A

    and:

    Marmot A
    ^v
    Ixali B
    ^v
    Marmot B
    ^v
    Wolf A
    ^v
    Ixali A

    You STILL have to cycle through targets on gamepad as well as on keyboard.

    Part two, mouse. The only minor advantage is smaller travelling distance, which will be offset by the fact you will have to first check the mob's name, then click it on the list instead of clicking on the mob skewering you directly.

    As for mobs occluding each other, it should be fixed once they turn on collision detection again.

    So all in all, a visible list might be a (subjective) improvement for mouse users. It does not make any difference for keyboard and gamepad control schemes though and doesn't address the problem this thread is trying to get fixed.

    where is this list of mobs we have in game now that shows what we are fighting?
    Just because you can not see the list doesn't mean it isn't there. Where do you think you get your targets to cycle through from? Right, from a LIST of available targets. Which is sorted from left to right, not from near to far at the moment.

    Seriously ? if you can't see the list the list doesn't matter.

    This would be so nice to have for AoE's but they have already said on the JP forum they have no plans to fix the issue of mobs dying when casting AoE spells.
