    Holiday backstories (and quests)

Okay so I thought we can use this to discuss what we know of the Holidays and how they originated thus far, as well as discuss the past and present story arks revolving around these holidays

I'll start by posting what I remember/know about them thus far

    • Heavensturn: based on the Eastern Zodiac. Orthardians (that's the right term, right?) come to show us the wonders of the year's animal. They managed to get a beloved and dearly missed knight of Ishgard involved one year
    • Little Ladies Day: Starting when the Princess of the Thorne line knows why the caged bird sings...because she was the bird in question. So she pulled a Princess and Pauper to explore the world, worried the sultan of the era to death. Caused a realm wide search for her...and so we celebrate that day (I assume the Sultan loosened her restrictions from that point), her soul had possessed a mammot once, and she has inspired a trio of idols to well, become idols and a family to try to reconnect.
    • All Saint's Wake: The Voidsent want to unleash a Night of Devilry for some reason and thus disguise themselves as a traveling circus for their annual attempts.
    • Moonfire Faire: At the time of the Calamity War bad things were happening, the Dusk Vigil had fell, Bahamut was going on a rampage and a bomb was causing a heat wave. the Bomb, known as the Bombard King caused a group to start the faire to gather adventurers to help repel him
    • Hatching Tide: A woman is having dreams of past archons and seeks to realize them, roping adventures into her antics.
    • Valentione's Day: A tradition starting in Ishagrd, yet ironically isn't celebrated there (maybe Thordian and his line want nothing to do with Love because of Shiva's relationship with Hraesvelgr :P). This has a Noblewoman go around Eorzea to spread Love throught the realm
    • Starlight Celebration: Presumably also form the Calamity, a bearded Temple Knight draped in crimson gave succor and shelter to some children out in the cold, becoming known as the Saint of Nymia. While this celebration started in Ishgard It is not celebrated there due to Nidhogg and his rampart bigotry, desire to avenge Ratatoskr and being a general meanie and scrooge :P. Bells were involved somewhere.
And thats about all I can remember about these holidays

There's also The Rising and Make it Rain.

The Rising is a commemoration of the Calamity. On a meta note it pairs up with Moonfire Faire to encompass Obon's dual aspects of summer festival and commemorating the dead. On a Super Hyper Meta Note it's celebration of FF14's successful relaunch and a time for the Devs to break the fourth wall with a vengeance.

Make It Rain's exceedingly complex backstory is "we noticed there was a big gap between the Spring Events and Moonfire Faire so we decided we needed an early-summer event".

Really looking forward to this year's Rising, and just how badly they're gonna tease 4.0 at us.

The Rising should be coming up soon, shouldn't it? They did say they were doing their 3-year anniversary broadcast...

Really hoping for some hints to 4.0, cuz we can be reasonably sure The Rising is going to be before 3.4.

More importantly, I can haz SAM? And it can haz Vergil-style combat aesthetic?

Without going into too much detail, pretty much every seasonal predates the 7th Umbral Era (what I assume you mean from "Calamity" in the Moonfire Faire and Starlight celebrations). Only the Rising should be canonically established post-Bahamut (technically it should be around ~2.3 in the timeline, but shoehorning seasonal events into the proper timeline is dangerou sbusiness.)

Though we can probably say most of these are, at least, Sixth Astral Era inventions. I wouldn't be surprised if some are older though--Heavensturn in particular.

http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Category:Events is probably a good place to start your digging for information on their histories

All it's going to take is to have an NPC with a great katana roaming around the game until 4.0, playerbase will go nuts. Though they could end up teasing the other jobs if they were so inclined. Either way I'm excited for it.
