    Possible PvP Resource Project

    Hello!

I've been noticing a lot of gripes about the quality of matches due to matchmaking being weird so early in the season. There's also been a fair amount of inquiries from newer players on how to be most effective in their role in PvP. It's got me thinking: if the PvE community has access to "in-depth" resources like MTQcapture and Mr. Happy's videos, why can't the PvP community have such resources?

I know some may say that people don't often care to look at the guides before jumping in for the first time. It's true -- some people just genuinely like to get their feet wet without any sort of guidance. But I would also argue that there are still players out there who truly want to learn and improve, but are lacking the resources to do so. It is ignorance in the strictest sense, but not always willfully so.

Therefore, I would like the PvP community's opinion on putting together a website with detailed explanations of each of our current PvP game modes, general strategies and gearing guides, job-specific guides, and meta-game articles. It is my belief that if effort is put forth in arming newcomers with better knowledge, then we may see an increase in participation, and ultimately, better quality matches for everyone. This could even be expanded into video guides, although creating something like this is not something I am personally experienced with.

Any assistance and advice would be more than welcome. I don't claim to be an expert or anything, but I would like to try and help with some of the issues that we're having with matchmaking, participation, and general lack of knowledge.

I also made this post because I hardly know anyone outside of Primal and was too nervous to bug you guys in discord, but you all should have a say in this as well!

I mean, if the people making those vids were personally interested in PvP and thought their viewers would be as well... wouldn't we have seen some by now? Or perhaps it just has too many different conditions and outcomes to cover for the guide video medium to do it justice?

But if you're willing to put something out there, I wish you the best of luck. I'd expect quite a few people would appreciate it, whether in the typical guide style or otherwise.

Personally I'd just like to see guides with a brief overview of the gametype (Shatter, Slaughter, Feast, etc.), and a few of the tips and tricks, enemies to fear, enemies to prioritize, when to push, when to hold, when to fall back, etc. Generalities and some specifics both, but not necessarily comprehensive. That'd be enough for me. (A casual, go with FC-mates sometimes for fun, albeit tryhard fun, kind of player.) A full-fledged website on the subject would be beyond my range, but might well hype and focus the PvP playerbase a bit.

I think that's the crux of the issue, though. They may not be interested in PvP in the slightest, and that's perfectly fine. It's better left for people who actually care about it to do something. While PvP in this game isn't necessarily the most complex, it does require some introduction to a number of concepts that may need explanation over several videos.

But yeah, what you described is kind of what I'm aiming for. Though my specialty is Feast, I would still like to cover all of the modes (even The Fold, perhaps!) Thank you very much for the support.

I'd help if I knew how to do such things. Unfortunately for me, my computer is old, my internet is not great and I don't know much about making content.

I'll help contribute in whatever way I can... I primarily play Frontlines though.

This would be a great help. My dev skills are sorely lacking and having web space would be great. Do you ever use the PvP discord server? I don't think we have the ability to send PMs on here, and it's probably not a good idea to share contact info on here. If you do, my name on there is Luminohelix(Kyrie).

That's perfectly fine! Even just reviewing the information for accuracy and providing feedback will be a huge help.

I think that a problem you're going to run into is that they are a lot of dissenting opinions about how certain jobs should be played in PvP. General tactics is one thing, but overall utility is another beast entirely. People are almost constantly debating when and where they should or should not be using specific skills, and, quite frankly, there's not always a 'right' answer. PvP is a fluid environment. It can be tricky to make any kind of adequate guide for something like this.

Posted this on reddit awhile back, if it helps any https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...estion/d1jwg14

This is really interesting as far as general advice, also

IMO confidence is absolutely the most important factor when going into pvp

I agree with februs that going too into detail about recommendations for specific jobs/roles might be iffy but general information would still be great. Theres unfortunately a lot of misinformation out there...

You're absolutely right, and I aim to limit it to more of a "suggestion" rather than a hard and fast rule. Obviously, a player will do what they think is right in whatever situation they may find themselves in. But at the very least, we could give some options for inexperienced participants to consider.

I think one of the most neglected parts of helping people become better at PvP is the focus on the psychology of it all. I'm no certified Psychologist, but in any competitive game there's also a mental game going on. There are people who get provoked into making decisions they would never normally do. It can happen to the best of us and make us start to doubt our effectiveness, which can ultimately lead to worse play in the future. With the Meta Articles, I was hoping to share some basic information on subjects like that. Also, thank you very much for that Reddit link! There are several things in there that I forgot to consider, either for the basic intro guide or the role-specific guides. If you want, I would like to credit you once the site is up.

As for an update, I have completed the first draft of an introductory guide to PvP that goes over the different modes, PvP ranks, limit breaks, and other generally important subjects. However, this document is currently 7 pages long. ; ; It might not be so bad once it's put on an actual web page, though. :P At any rate, if it does end up being too long, there will be steps taken to break things down into an easier to digest format, if possible.
