The thread referenced by the OP actually had some troll posts and one troll posting an image of Bin Laden... they probably closed it to keep things getting out of hand

Make your own community website then...there's lots of gaming portals that allow that and you can make all the off topic forums to your content.

Very true and I am a member of a few. But keeping the community in one place and giving them the tools they need/like is what makes it strong. 1000 players in the same place is a far better community than 1000 spread across 6 different forums on 7 different sites.

Why the hell would a Final Fantasy XIV forum need to have a section like that? Go to Gaia Online if you want to just say stuff for the sake of saying it.
