To verify a few points as discussed in this thread: if obtaining only Legendary Medals is your goal, you don't have to have the Yo-kai Watch equipped. Just remember to have out the minion corresponding to the type of weapon you are trying to get. Also, please note that it's not possible to have a minion out while your chocobo companion is present in the party.

Depending on the weapon, the locations where Legendary Medals are obtained differ, so be sure to check the Yo-kai Medallium for details on where to go!
Will we get Yo-kai Medals turn-in for Yo-kai Legendary Medals?
