I think they can bring back point allocation, but it won't be the same as it was before.

Obviously, they are going to work within the framework with the auto-allocation of points that currently exists, so you won't be responsible for applying all the points you were able to before. Since physical levels are gone, it's probable you'll allocate points by class (as per its rank) rather than rely on a giant pool of them that you have to stick with across all classes.

Even if you can stick 40 points into strength, as someone gave as an example, it definitely won't negate the importance gear that gives you an extra 8. Every point counts to a min-maxer and the very best gear will always be the most valuable.

"Spec'ing" has a long, glorious tradition in RPGs and MMOs, so point allocation is not out-of-place or unwelcome in FFXIV. The potential for a variety of strategies built with the same class can only be achieved with flexibility like this.
