I think you can achieve some basic level of competency at it if you look at the job abilities in advance, a guide, or a YouTube video. Doing that, I was completely not surprised when my MCH got gauss barrel in there. I'm not saying you'll know how to masterfully hit the perfect opener just as soon as you get an ability, but you can certainly know what to do in advance. The real draw, of course, is getting to see if you like how something feels to play. That's something I wouldn't have been able to accurately gauge about gauss barrel without trying it.
