they just need to add tab to autocomplete names, like a translator list. I dont wanna change my name.

Agreed. I like my name, there is nothing wrong with or inconvenient about the system. Two names was an IMPROVEMENT and added variety to the game instead of seeing so many people with names like "Sephirothcloudtifaxxx" or "fivebleachcharactersnames" or "Sometimesipoopsideways." Also, RMT now have to divide their name consisting of 1-3 letters like "hhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhh" so now it is easier to tell the different between him and "hhhhhhhhhh thhhhhhhh"
I think it's great we can have a first and last name. I wouldn't wanna change mine, but maybe let people have only one name if they want? I dunno
When I need to /tell someone in front of me I just do "/t <t> blabla" so it's not really a problem. For people I don't see and need to party with, generally they talked at least once or shouted or what not but for me to have awareness of their existence I had to see their names on my log before. So I grab my mouse and copy/paste the name.
For people I often chat with via /tell, it would be nice to be able to add nicknames.
Exemple: My character is Seyra Mihgo, a friend could add my nickname, say "Sey", in a specific menu (other than Friend List menu) that writes it in a database on your Final Fantasy XIV user folder. When he wants to /tell me he would just type "/t Sey blabla".
IMO shortening names is just a stupid idea that obviously reflect the lack of cultural respect from this dev team to non-japanese community.
Not all languages can write a full name with 4 kanjis... :/
And assuming one of the game official language is german (which happens to have some terribly long names) i do think it's at least disrespectful of him to think about shortening names...
If they want shorter names, they should add a racial template for every race. This way, as example, a dude that don't want a custom name and surname can just use the template name to write something in the race style, like A'B (Y'shtola) for seeker of sun, AAB (Momodi) for dunefolk, AB CB (Yoran Oran) for plainfolk, etc. Just make a pop-up list of syllables/words that can enter there and that's it.
Pleasse get rid of surnames... its annoying as hell to type out some of them long names.... /pcmd add ABCDEFGHI JKLMNOPQRS.... enough said pretty dumb idea.

Just a useful tip I think you guys might want to use/adapt to solve the problem for now until they change it, if they change it, the way you want. ^^
There are plenty methods to solve that.
1) Copy and paste their name from your chat log.
2) Ask them to come stand in front of you so you can use <t> in place of their "OMGLongName AndLongSurname".
3) If they're the last person that sent /tell to you,you can use <r> instead.you can hit CTRL+r to call up their name into your chat input line, then delete the /tell part and reuse the name right there.
4) If it's someone in your friend list, you can invite from friend list.
5) If you've sent/received a /tell from them recently (most recent 30, according to my list) you'll have their name in [audience] list which allows you to use auto-translation (TAB KEY) function to auto-fill the whole name for you.
6) Only invite those who have short name (LOL! J/K)
Oh wow. That would totally suck and irritating. Why would the system do that?Sorry it happens to you. I never noticed that happening to me. But again I only have 3-4 people I send tell to on regular basis. And my [audience] list would grow to 30 names, then stay that way. Recent audience gets to the top page of the list. It has pushed off some people down the bottom, though. But I always keep my top 30.

Player
I want to keep my name.
The reason this thread was created was because Yoshi-san asked for it. I guess reading comprehension is really a lost art.
Personally I hate last names. It makes everything difficult. From chat or party invitations.
Of course you would expect most people to want to keep what they have without rational reason to keep them as they are now. Perhaps it is natural aversion to any kind of change.
Did any of you consider that there may be storage and programming reasons why it would be necessary to shorten names?
It may be that when they change the UI, that the screen will have difficulty with names as long as they are now.
Most players have ridiculous names now. It's easier to type" /pcmd addl xxsephirothxxx, than /pcmd add Naerieamnai Rauilsiliniesa.
