I would like to see surnames stay because its much easier to get a name instead of sitting at the screen for an extra hour because all names are taken. If it must be reduced just make it 10 characters for first and 10 for last.

I can understand why people complain about the length, people clearly abuse the shit out of it. Often I'll look at some characters, and it's more like a bad Scrabble hand than a name.

However, when Square gets around to implementing the obvious search function, like we should have had months ago, that won't really be an issue, so I am perfectly fine with keeping them as they are.

I wish they would ban certain FF related names as well personally, this is abit off topic but I am tired of seeing 100 people run around with Highwind as their surname.

i would, however, like for the option hide last names as well as my entire name.

If anything they should give the option to people that want it and don't want it.
But I've never seen a name so long that I stop everything that I'm doing and say wtf so.

Anyway this would seem like an extremely stupid move to make because of so many names are the same and need to be changed and if people are forced to change they'll all just change into the SAME name without the extra space.

What the hell? I thought they were done with working on little details and ready for big overhauls next and now this. SE you disappoint me so.

I'm sure this is long lost with Tanaka out of the window, and maybe it has been said in this thread already, but wasn't the original idea supposed to be that you can create one word nicknames for people on your friend list, or something to that effect? I remember it was extremely briefly talked about, or maybe I'm just going insane.

To be honest, pretty much every complaint I've seen about longer names is a problem with the chat system, not the names themselves. Tab-completion would solve the vast majority of the perceived issues with the current system. You should simply be able to type the first few letters of a name, hit tab, and it give you a drop-down box listing the names of everyone online at the current time whose name matches that criteria. Many problems solved, no changes to the names themselves necessary.
