I've been unhappy with many of the decisions Yoshi's made, but if I suddenly found myself having to put up with that kind of nonsense, it would very likely be one of the few things that could completely break my faith in the game.

Doesn't bother me. I still see it on this game and the fact that there is a surname available only means you can have a lot of Sephiroth clones with slight changes into the last name. Sephiroth Cloud, Sephiroth Xiv, Cloud Sephiroth.

Surprisingly enough I have yet to see someone with a Sephiroth name. But I see alot of Gainsboro, Highwind, etc names from other FF titles and that really chaps my arse. It just bothers me that people cannot come up with a name for themselves without stealing one from something else. Pet peeves really suck XD.

My bias towards it is solely based on the fact that I can't think up one nice original name to begin with. Two is just too much for me. I feel sorry for my future children.

But when Yoshi was talking about shortening names, I think he meant just the characters of the name, not taking surnames out completely. I may be wrong.

What about if you would like to keep your last name, but see no real issue with asking players post 2.0 to keep their entire full names below 20-24 characters long? Might even be easier to add people to your friends list

Except in some Asian countries where their family name comes first. Same idea tho.

Fixed it for you. In any case, having a surname gives another dimension of individualism in the characters we create. I say keep them. Also, unrelated to the thread: I'd rather the mods integrate some sort of legitimate poll system. I'm sick of seeing these generic threads saying "Like this if you (A)" or "Like this if you (B)" just so that people would like their posts.
