A lot of people will tell you to level your crafters, your gatherers, and your retainers. Most won't tell you the enormous amounts of gil you will pour into them doing so. IOW, if you need gil, leveling all these classes isn't going to do that for you. However, if you pace your leveling instead powering through with gil, you can level all of these classes and even turn a profit.

The thing is, a big reason to level all of this things is to become self-reliant. You will find that by the time you level all of these classes and get them geared, you don't really need gil as you have the means to acquire whatever it is your after yourself. Becoming a millionaire is kind of thing that just naturally happens from having so many ways to supply a demand.

Last, making tons of gil in a very short time can happen for non-crafters/gatherers as well. For example a lucky EX primal run can grant your items that crafters will pay generously for. Done with DF, toss a /shout to see if anyone wants the item, and done. In the end though, the way you make gil in this game is by making more than you spend. You simply have to find the method that works for you, and be ready to find more of them based on what you're doing at the time.

If you are sensible you don't need massive amounts of gil to level crafts. Start with the gathering classes esp mining and grab all the mats yourself and sell off the HQ you want to keep the nq for levelling the crafts.

When u start the crafts don't just stay on one craft all the way to 60 or you are just asking to lose gil. Level all crafts to 15 next take CUL to 37 and then level all to 37. Finally take all to 50 getting all the skills will help you hq and make the leves cheaper and easier to do. Also level up your retainers to get mats you are short on or a pain to get. Beyond 50 carry on keeping them all closely levelled together many of the recipes will cross over and make it cheap to level.

Agreed. That is why I also mentioned that you can actually turn a profit leveling DoH if it's paced, and as you say, sensible. But if you decide to powerlevel them and marketboard all the mats and your gear, we are talking a massive gil dump.

Leveling your gatherers first is akin to your comment about how leveling just one crafting class is asking to pay serious dividends towards the one you choose. Without DoH to support DoL, we're talking having to acquire HQ gear, materia, and melds for you to be able to gather sensibly and efficiently. MASSIVE gil spending unless you have a crafting buddy to help you out, and even then, it is a lot to ask of them. On my server anyone can expect to put about a solid mil into their gatherers getting them to 50. Luckily, they share most of the gear through the leveling stages.

It's a difficult choice when choosing to level DoH or DoL first. One has you buying mats the other can gather, the next has you buying the gear the other can make. Leveling them all at once can be done to get past that, but it will be sloooooowww. Some people are ok with that though, but like you pointed out, there are distinct advantages from taking a class like CUL straight 37 or CRP to 50 once they all hit 15.
