Why, if we can ride a mount with a companion active...

... can't we ride a chocobo porter with a companion out? Seems like a needless distinction.

First thing first, why ride chocobo porter when you already have chocobo?

Probably something to do with having your chocobo summoned and actually riding one via porter being two separate instances, like being unable to queue dungeons with your chocobo. I could be wrong.

Because Chocobo are needy creatures that love you and are bred to work for their owners so they need you to ride them to feel fulfilled.

For reals, probably just added it as porters would realistically be confused why you would be opting to ride their birds verses your own. Especially when it's standing 4 feet away from you.

I think you are thinking of renting a chocobo. I am referring to the chocobos that move on a predetermined path to take you to a specific place.

I do when I'm too lazy to ride a mount myself. Chocobo porters also has all monsters ignore you.

I use chocobo porters every chance I get.. At level 60 its really very boring to run through all these areas where the monsters ignore you. Theres no excitement, no danger, and i've already explored all the areas on foot 10+ times anyway.

So I hop on a chocobo porter and play on my phone for the 1-2 minute chocobo rides. Or i use that time to go take the bathroom break i've been putting off for two hours, or grab a snack/drink.

Chocobo porters offer players a convenient break, while still progressing to their destination.
