    Free Companies

I'm a newbee (just level 15) and I was recently asked to join a new a free company. I declined because to be honest I'm not very good right now. I have not figured out nuances of the game yet. I had planned to do pve until I feel confident in my abilities.

My question is did I make the right choice? Should I join a free company when the next opportunity arises because I could learn a lot by being part of a group? Or should I continue along my current path and wait until I feel more confident about my abilities? I'm a tank if that matters.

Well don't join a FC that invites you blindly. But many are ready to help new players.
If you know people in one, go for it. FC's have many benefits.

It's depend of FC. Some FCs like to have many members as they can regardless new or endgame players. Also your personal preference of what kind of FC you want to be a part of plays a big role in choosing an FC too. Like Canadane said don't join FC that blindly send out invites. Instead if an FC that has its leader personally doing the recruiting is worth giving a shot. For instance the FC I'm currently in has its own leader doing the recruiting personally and it's the friendliest FC I have ever joined. In fact I call it my home since I have members who share the joys and sorrows of adventures in Eorzea and of course our FC healers like to play a game of "How low can you go" with me as tank XD good time.

You can always leave if you don't like it. Can just join to see what's up, and if it's not quite what you want, there's always somewhere else.

(personally, I declined all blind invites out of principle, but decided to join when someone approached me. Largely just to prevent more blind invites)

This was a blind invite so I agree with you that it might b be best to decline.

Blind invites I decline out of principle, in any MMO that I've played over the years. I've ended up in my FC after an advertisement in the chat window. Had a little chat with the FC leader who recruits people personally. And I've joined them. That's nearly 2 years ago. Some of the people do raids, others (me included) don't. All have laid back and relaxed manners. We have people of all ages in the FC. We treat new players to the game the same as we do with seasoned players. The same. Need help with something? Just ask

But being in an FC does have it's benefits. Our FC house has a marketboard right outside the gate. Stuff like vendors, chocobo stable, bank (retainer) access, barbershop etc. And nearly all crafting stations are there as well. Did I join the FC for this stuff? Nope, but it sure is useful

But I would say have fun in the game and eventually you'll run into an FC that suits you

It's a really good to join a FC early if the FC is the kind where people are up for answering your questions, giving you advice, joining you for instances etc. But blind invites don't usually end up like that. Instead, you could check out your server forums and see if you could find a nice one there, or when you meet nice people online (and they're on your server if you meet them in an instance) you can ask if their FC is open for new members. Good luck!

The usual advice is to decline blind invites. But a blind invite really just means you're joining before learning much about them, so it's random chance whether they'll be a group you like or not. An alternative strategy is to accept any invite, so you're a member of the FC while learning whether you like them or not. Since you're not really going to learn what they're like until you join anyway, that can work. Join any random group that invites you, see what they're like, then either stay if you like them or leave if you don't. Repeat until you find one you like.

I've joined FCs before through blind invites that really didn't want much to do with me once I'd joined. (I didn't stick with those ones for long.) But the most friendly, helpful MMO "guild" I've ever been in was also an FC I joined through a random blind invite. So I'm going to persist in saying they're at least worth a try. (This was, however, shortly after the game came out, so all FCs were just getting started, and that may have made a difference in the availability of friendly ones that would send out lots of invites.)
