So...I just hit 50 and have been running around for about an hour doing quests for 4000 exp each. I feel like bashing my head into my monitor...

You should have warned me I would go at it for several more hours with no end in sight...Losing my will to play the damn game this is ridiculous.
Sounds like you're working through the 2.1 to 2.5 patch story quests.
You can check how many you have left before reaching Heavensward here: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...=1&category3=2
A lot of people were put off by the number of quests needed to reach Heavensward. Supposedly SE is planning on making 4.0 accessible without doing all the Heavensward story stuff but I don't think they've mentioned if they're planning on making the ARR patch stuff skippable in the future.
Thank you! Just killed Leviathan, and it looks like I'm not even half way. Going to be a long night lol.
How about you stop racing to the end and at least try to enjoy the ride a tiny bit? There are a lot of senseless fetch quests in the 2.1-2.5 storyline, sure, but there's also bits and pieces of the greater picture.
There's about 20 quests between each boss trial, and for patch 2.4 and 2.5 there's also a mandatory storyline dungeon. There's ten additional optional dungeons you can unlock in Mor Dhona though, which I recommend to break things up a bit.
There are like a hundred quests that take place after the main story of A Realm Reborn, yet they do very little to contribute to the overall story of the game. While it might have been okay when they were released one set at a time, people who want to reach level 51+ content have to get through it first since last I checked, you cannot go to Ishgard or any of the Heavensward areas without first completing those quests. How about you stop racing to the end and at least try to enjoy the ride a tiny bit? I know, my girlfriend went through all of that last week. And yes, there are a lot of quests that make you wonder if you really are the Bringer of Light, but still - when it all comes together in 2.4-2.5, it's pretty satisfying to see it unfold. And you get to thump some bosses on the way. There are like a hundred quests that take place after the main story of A Realm Reborn, yet they do very little to contribute to the overall story of the game. But my point is, if you just want to get to the end, the experience won't be very nice and you'll tire yourself out. My girlfriend split things up by doing an optional dungeon here, a couple of beast tribe quests there, a roulette after that, then keep going with the MSQ for a few hours. Makes things more manageable for the brain, and overall a more enjoyable experience than simply forcing oneself through 100 quests.
That's the problem with the game though. You have to get to the end in order to unlock the content that makes it enjoyable. Optional dungeons? Have to reach that point in the story before you can unlock it. Beast tribe quests? You have to do the story. Roulette? You have to have unlocked those dungeons through the story and complete them first. Everything is tied to the story and you have to do them before you even have the option to do other things. You only have Leveling and Guildhest roulettes before that and the number of dungeons available is very small until you complete more of the story.
I enjoy the story a lot myself. I recently took an alt through the 2.X patch storyline just to refresh myself on the details.
On the other end, I think it's true that a lot of people only go through it to unlock stuff. I remember 3.1 having a relatively low completion rate which suggests that a lot of people skipped it since it didn't gate anything at the time.
I think SE realizes this too as the Heavensward patch stories have been a lot more focused and shorter than the ARR ones.
This is only true because people are sheep and think they have to be on the same page as everyone else in a game. They don't think it's okay to not be at the same spot as other people. If people slowed down and took their time, all of the content might be more enjoyable.
