Yeah good luck with this there hasn't been a peep from SE all day today about this. Some have said after multiple attempts to log in it will Force the update but I tried this 12 times with no success that might be worth trying on your end. You could just delete and then spend the next 15 hours reinstalling you'll probably be done before SE makes a statement about this
It will eventually let you get the patch. It is annoying, but keep trying. My guess is the patch server is getting overwhelmed with connections.
This is affecting me as well on PC. I have closed and reopened the launcher multiple times. I also went into the FFXIV folder in documents, opened FFXIV_BOOT.cfg and modified BootVersionCheckMode to 1. Exited launcher and reopened; same issue.

This worked for me, this morning:
1.Navigate to C:\Users\"YOUR ACCOUNT"\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn and open the FFXIV_BOOT.cfg file with Notepad. Change the contents to this (I deleted the extra spaces between the words and numbers, not sure if that makes a difference):
<FINAL FANTASY XIV Boot Config File>
<Version>
Version 2
Language1
Region 2
EulaAgreement 0
StartupCompleted 0
B4EulaAgreement 1
BootVersionCheckMode 1
ConfigReset 0
2.Navigate to C:\Users\"YOUR ACCOUNT"\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\downloads\ffxivpatch and then delete all the contents in this folder.
3.(I hide game folders in My Documents to reduce the clutter, you might not need to do this step.) Find the "My Games" folder in C:\Users\"YOUR ACCOUNT"\Documents and Right-Click the folder > Properties > Uncheck Hidden > Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files.
4.Restart your computer and launch the updater -- hopefully this works for you!
I also deleted my temp internet files and reset my IE settings right before I restarted my computer. I'm sure that didn't really do the trick, as I already tried it three times before I did the boot.cfg editing - I just wanted to do it one last time, just in case!
