Starting questions and tips

I've never played PVP in this game but I want to give it a shot. The problem is that I know nothing about it. Can anyone give me some tips on how it all works? I've only PVPed in WoW so that's my only frame of reference.

Can we do it while leveling up or is it a strictly 50+ thing? How essential is PVP gear? I don't have any PVP gear but my retainers keep bringing me the level 50 stuff. Should I wait until they bring me a full set before going in? Which is the easiest class to start on? I have a 60 brd, smn, and sch. I do realize healers get targeted first so don't let that be part of your consideration. I was checking out the wiki page on my class' spells to see the specific PVP spells and I noticed the enhanced version notes. Do we get those by simply leveling (like the PVE stuff) or is there something extra we must do? Anything else I don't know about?
