Food displaying what stats it gives - confirmed

And it's as horrible as people thought it would be. It's as carebear as it comes. Why does SE feel we need to be treated like babies? Do we need to know every little thing in the game just so the elitist min/maxers can feel superior for doing 1.1 more dps?

What happened to the mystery, the intrigue, the thrill of figuring things out on your own? What's next, we being able to see the damage amounts on skills? The game would be boring if we knew a skill added 200 damage to our normal attack and etc.

If they keep this up the game will be ruined and filled with WoW kiddies looking for a new game to infest and cry that things are too hard.

Nobody actually figured that stuff out on their own, though; enterprising folks did science on the game mechanics in FFXI, for example, and reverse engineered how a lot of stuff worked, and figured out how to maximise their potential... which it seems like you're against in principle, so I'm sort of confused?

In any event, FFXIV is a different game, there's absolutely no reason -not- to encourage more transparency. I guess it sucks if you're one of the people who liked to do science on things that were non-obvious in FFXI, and I can absolutely sympathise with that viewpoint, but for the vast majority of the playerbase, actually knowing the import of actions and choices that you make like what food to eat without having to rely on someone else's research on a wiki that may or may not exist makes the game /drastically/ better.

Yeah, it's awful that people might actually know what the heck they're doing in a game and the rule they're playing with. How terrible!

Wait no I meant the exact opposite of that. What in the world is so wrong with being able to get a firm understanding of the way the game works, simply by looking at the items you're using? If anything, stats being hidden helps the 'elitist min/maxers' more than anyone else. Not all of us have the time to invest hours of our lives parseing numbers to maybe kind of sort of figure out what any given one thing might do.

I know I love looking at a trait that says "Increases emnity generated by all actions by 10" and having no clue what that could mean for my character or others.

I agree with O.P. in principle but I don't think knowing the stats which food provide is really the perfect example of this problem.

Yes, because eating some food, opening your Attributes tab, and taking note of the difference before and after is so mysterious and intriguing. The elitist min/maxers figured out damage formulas, and had BiS gear sets figured out as soon as new gear came out in XI. There was no mystery or intrigue. There was only ignorant players who thought their "lol my $15 a month" gear/SJ/strategy etc. was fine.

Also, I'd be fine with dynamic tooltips that displayed damage. That way I don't have to alt+tab out to go read about the poor guy who hit 50,000 level 1 mobs to figure everything out. The world and story should be mysterious and intriguing. Not things like stats, abilities, and fundamental game mechanics.

    You're a new player.
    You go to Wards.
Decide to look at what food would be nice.
    ???
Go to sites and hope to God the information is updated/is there at all.

    Or:

    Go to Wards.
    See something you like.
    Buy it.

... people asked for this, they're delivering. Good.

Mystery and intrigue can still exist in the game, but I believe that game mechanics, the simple knowledge of HOW TO PLAY THE GAME should not be be hidden. As it is, people rarely use food, culinarian is borderline useless. Most players aren't going to try out every single piece of food in the game, compare data across thousands of sample monsters to extrapolate which ones are best to use in a given situation. They will either look it up online, or just not bother.

By your logic, equipment shouldn't have stats on it either. We shouldn't be able to tell if this new body piece enhances accuracy, or if it's magic attack. Heck, it could not even be wearable by your rank or level just by looking at it, all that's there is a name and some flavor text.
