Also the only time it would be faster to get to the flank from the back and vice versa when not locked on is on huge bosses and that is also only if you are someone that goes all the way to the flank/back rather than the edge. The back starts where the circle under the enemy ends and the flank starts where the circle begins near the back. If you stick near that edge positionals will generally be decently faster

I'd say the L3 lockon is mostly used to quickly orient the camera when it's facing away from the current target. It's much faster and simpler to simply tap the L3 button on then off again than it is to rotate the camera with the analog stick. Plus it can be helpful learning positionals, though not every job has positionals. If you don't like L3 lock-on it you may disable it. But I encourage you to try it before disabling it.

    I use it on melee
On ranged I use it during LB3 so I can't accidentally miss (since it can completely miss if you aren't careful).

Sure, but while you're moving you aren't facing your target and thus your auto-attacks aren't going off at all. The small window you get when using skills isn't enough for all auto-attacks to land, and so for melee and pre-52 BRD/MCH lock-on is very helpful. For other classes (who don't rely on auto-attacks) it's not really important.

But I've used it heavily for years now, so I'm very comfortable with simply clicking it off instantly if I do need to move out of something very quickly, or move through my target. It's easy when you get used to it, and I do notice a DPS difference (became very obvious in FCoB).
