I think that in the end there needs to be some sort of compromise. This is a heavily discussed topic at the moment and people feel strong about it, there are multiple threads and there are pages upon pages of discussion. There are thousands of FFXIV players and in this thread there are about 400 votes, I don't know how well the discussion on these forums represent the wishes of the majority of the actual players but it does give the impression that there are more against than for, but nevertheless the pro wyvern also represents many players.

In the end I honestly prefer that the dev team realizes their own creative ideas rather than just copying and pasting what the loudest segment of the audience is requesting, because that is a scary thought.

    Sleep well kitten :P

You could say the poll is a majority of the people that come to the forums since I do know a lot of people that never come here... heck even myself if you noticed didn't come here till recently and I have been running around this game since alpha. Though I did have a lot of posts in the alpha/beta forums but that was mostly talking with the people on there about the game and life.

I also hope the dev team already has a good idea of what they really wanted for this class... and no matter what really I hope they go for that and let it sit for a bit before thinking or looking at what the players say.

Please forgive me if I put oil into the fire again because I have NOT read the whole thread and I'm very sorry if my idea has already been said! Bear with me! D:
I don't mean to cause any (new) fight, just to make this clear from the very beginning!!

My idea would be to make both playing styles possible.

Personally I really wish for a dragon (no, not for the sake of a new FFXI - never played it - I really like the idea of a dragon partnering class in a fantasy game though!) however I can see that others fear that the dragoon might lose his jumper character (which I like a lot, too).

This is why I think a summonable dragon should be implemented so that the player can choose whether or wether not to have it as a partner (maybe a dragon gained through a quest later on in the story).

If the player does not wish to use the dragon he stays the normal strong Jumper Dragoon.
If he wants the dragon, he summons it and is the same Jumper Dragoon but debuffed in his attributes as long as the dragon is on (to keep the balance).
He gains other advantages like attack from two sides at once, one pulling aggro, dragon doing buffs/debuffs/elemental damage (fire), so that summed up he deals the same damage as the solo dragoon.
This way there would be two playing styles for the dragoon (and for both parties) that are hopefully balanced.

Besides I think it would be good if the dragon is not as small as it seems to be in FFXI because that one was really cute but evoked the impression of a Pokemon and his trainer imo. I think a more fantasy like class like a dragon-rider and not trainer or something would really suit the game, though, and it could also be connected to the story.

Dragons seem to be some of the bad guys in FFXIV but no people is entirely evil imo so there might be a few that seek balance between creatures and are prepared to work together with worthy knights (I really don't think dragon should be made "stupid bloodthursty beasts" but rather have some wise character traits, after all they are old creatures as well). So Dragoons could be seen as mighty but ambiguous knights that are praised for their strength but feared for their friendship with dragons (since the Eorzean people fear dragons I guess; it could be the official propaganda about the Drg).

An idea what the dragoon might look like with a big dragon is:

    Bigger version

There could be more than one dragon available (different or not in skills) that can also be mounted and takes a big and...uhm...beastly...role in the fight. (Dragoon on the left is there in comparsion for sizes.)

I too haven't read this whole discussion but wanted to give my input for a minute or two.

Realistically, it seems as though most of the playerbase doesn't want Dragoon as a pet class and that makes sense. I imagine a lot of people who play FFXIV also played FFXI at one point or another and pet classes in XI always got and still do get the short end of the deal. So why bring that mentality here as well?

I did love my pet wyven in XI but he died very easily, if it was properly implemented in XIV with balance and care then I would absolutely love to have Dragoon with a pet. However, if it's implemented poorly, where the wyven is just my shadow and dies in two seconds, then I don't want it.

It would be nice to have the option to be a Dragoon with a pet, or a Dragoon without a pet, but it would essentially have to be two different classes and not called them Dragoon w/ Pet and Dragoon without Pet. lol

    @Loggos

I'm hoping for the same kind of thing. The option to have a dragon companion or choose not to at all.
Did you draw those? I really like them. Especially that there are different types. I think that could make Dragoon pretty interesting. :3 Perhaps different elemental wyverns. Or something like that. I love you ideas!

hmm having the options is not bad too, and if both options are equal in what they do it will be awesome as well. but again... i hope they stick with what they can do for now.. not wanting to be delay or anything.

And yet again... they did say to see if it still possible to implement it, but i do hope it will be after 2.0.

    @ Nabiri

Thank you, I'm very glad you like the idea! ^.^(Yeah, I drew those ones, thank you!).
The idea of different element types is pretty cool and one could also consider if they have different "class" characters (like more DD, more buff/debuff, tank). Then there is the question if dragons could be changed or if you stack to one as a partner the whole time.

I would be perfectly fine with that. Like I said, it could be possible to gain the dragon through a quest that is implemented later.
With the story that you have to deserve the respect and the trust of a dragon so that it decides to be your partner or anything like this.
If the dragoon comes without a dragon now but there is an option that dragon lovers can use one later (and others can still play DRG without one) I'd be completely satisfied.

Well Yoshida already explained the rules of 'pets'.
The real question comes down to both DRG and SMN being weaker in groups, because in solo play, having a pet would make them "Better" then everyone else, unless of course, each person is only allowed 1 pet. Like SMN or DRG can't have both a pet and Chocobo fighting.

that is most likely what will happen, the limit of having one pet only at a time per player, or even per party will be in place.

that way non pet classes can use the chocobo as their "pet"
