All this arguing...
Let me start saying that I'm a scrub and I don't do Savage so if you think my opnion is worthless because of this, don't bother to read.
I hate HAVING to DPS as a healer. I do DPS a lot though. My problem is when DPS becomes the rule and other players try to force it to players who don't want to DPS. The blame is not on the community, but in the game meta that is poorly designed, frcing high number of damage into classes supposed to have different meta than damage dealers. In the end, it all comes down to preference of the player, since every content in this game is clearable without healer DPS - words of the devs. It's ok, in a static, to want your healers to DPS as much as possible, you're a team striving to clear something with lower ilv than what's necessary and there are enrages and everything. But on DF content, you should just keep quiet and go with the flow.
In an ilvl MMO system healer DPS is pretty much inevitable since Duty Finder content has to be balanced around the lowest ilvl to enter.
If they make content where people at max ilvl have to spam heals with no time for DPS then people entering at minimum ilvl will just get obliterated.
Unless they make ilvl synching to match the minimum ilvl of the dungeon it's only natural that as the party increases in ilvl the tanks take less damage, the healers heal for more, and the DPS kill stuff faster resulting in less time needed for healing which frees up more time for damage.
"I hate HAVING to SING SONGS as a bard. My problem is when singing songs becomes the rule and other players try to force it to players who don't want to sing songs. In the end, it all comes down to preference of the player..."
It's not a good argument to make to argue for people choosing to leave a part (a really important and powerful part) of their job toolkit unused, be it healer DPS, bard songs, tank DPS (they could choose to just stand there spamming flash all day or choose to not to use their defensive cooldowns, right) or DDs not using their damage increasing cooldowns. All jobs should utilise all of their available abilities to maximise their performance and to help their group as much as they can.
It doesn't matter if they have said it can be cleared without healer DPS in theory at some point of the gear progression, if the content can't be cleared without healer DPS when it has been released. Show me a group that is capable of clearing any new Savage content when it comes out without any healer DPS. You aren't likely to find one. And no, it's not because the best DDs in the world just aren't good enough and need to be helped by their healers, it's because of the DPS requirements really are too high to be beaten without healer DPS and / or higher item level gear. And that's how it's designed.
And even if it would be possible to clear the fights without healer DPS, that argument could just as well be used for not singing songs, tanks not doing DPS, DDs not using appropriate cooldowns and so on. Even if you can intentionally lower your performance and still beat the fight, doesn't mean you should do it, since you're hindering your whole party.
My succinct thoughts on healer DPS: if you can, you should.
Whether or not SE gives far too many windows where healers "can" is a whole other can of worms, though.
Here's the bottom line. Regardless of what your preconceptions of a healer may be, you adapt to the content. The content isn't going to adapt to you.
In other MMOs, it may be that as healer you do nothing but heal. FFXIV is not other MMOs. You are given a skillset with plenty of tools for dishing out damage, and encounters with ample opportunity to use them. If you refuse to use those tools and take advantage of those opportunities, you are playing suboptimally and are a detriment to your party. If you want to play as a pure healer, FFXIV is not your game.
It's just that simple.
Ugh, don't remind me that this is actually a thing on my data center. Literally every Trial Roulette I get with a BRD they will not sing Foe's. I try not to force my elitism on them by asking them to sing but a typical response is usually:
1. I don't feel like it.
2. I don't want it lowering my DPS
3. I don't want to waste all my MP
Well since 2 and 3 don't apply to singing. (Foe's is never a waste of MP and doesn't lower BRD damage) I guess they are just chosing to play unoptimal.
Which I guess it's their subscription and if they don't feel comfortable singing it's perfectly reasonable. Just like healer DPS.

I think it's fine to dislike the focus on healer DPS in this game, so long as you don't let it impact you from playing properly. Implying that there's no hope for the encounter designs (and hence, the meta) to change is a bit lacking in perspective, IMO.Here's the bottom line. Note that I'm not disagreeing with the, "use your whole toolkit you bums!" part, I'm disagreeing with the idea that we have to like it or we should just GTFO. Current content won't change to become more healing-oriented, true, but it's not impossible to hope that future content might. I guess it depends on how the majority feel about the current meta.
I think people are confusing this game with something that should be no-lifed and hardcored. It's far from it. FF MMOs have ALWAYS been causal catered. It's the main reason why they've been so successful these past decades. They cater to the causal audience. While they do have tools and features in the game that allows players to turn on hardcore mode (so-to-speak). It's not their main premise. Yeah, the game gives you tools to DPS. Just like it gives you multiple job skills to craft your own gear and weapons. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. This game is filled to the brim with content for that very reason. I enjoy healing, I overheal most of time not because I'm bad, but because it strangely brings enjoyment(who'd have thought?). Something I don't get from button mashing on a DPS.
But of course. The general "meta" rule of thumb. If you aren't pushing your limits 200% of the time you're a waste of space. Makes me want to hand those people a gun so they can use it to it's full extent and shoot themselves.
