Here's the bottom line. Regardless of what your preconceptions of a healer may be, you adapt to the content. The content isn't going to adapt to you.

In other MMOs, it may be that as healer you do nothing but heal. FFXIV is not other MMOs. You are given a skillset with plenty of tools for dishing out damage, and encounters with ample opportunity to use them. If you refuse to use those tools and take advantage of those opportunities, you are playing suboptimally and are a detriment to your party. If you want to play as a pure healer, FFXIV is not your game.

    It's just that simple.

I think it's fine to dislike the focus on healer DPS in this game, so long as you don't let it impact you from playing properly. Implying that there's no hope for the encounter designs (and hence, the meta) to change is a bit lacking in perspective, IMO.

Note that I'm not disagreeing with the, "use your whole toolkit you bums!" part, I'm disagreeing with the idea that we have to like it or we should just GTFO. Current content won't change to become more healing-oriented, true, but it's not impossible to hope that future content might. I guess it depends on how the majority feel about the current meta.

I think people are confusing this game with something that should be no-lifed and hardcored. It's far from it. FF MMOs have ALWAYS been causal catered. It's the main reason why they've been so successful these past decades. They cater to the causal audience. While they do have tools and features in the game that allows players to turn on hardcore mode (so-to-speak). It's not their main premise. Yeah, the game gives you tools to DPS. Just like it gives you multiple job skills to craft your own gear and weapons. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. This game is filled to the brim with content for that very reason. I enjoy healing, I overheal most of time not because I'm bad, but because it strangely brings enjoyment(who'd have thought?). Something I don't get from button mashing on a DPS.

But of course. The general "meta" rule of thumb. If you aren't pushing your limits 200% of the time you're a waste of space. Makes me want to hand those people a gun so they can use it to it's full extent and shoot themselves.

Honestly, if you're actively and knowingly building enmity without doing anything beneficial, you're bad. You're making things harder (not slower but harder) for other people and that's somehow funny to you. Just because you know you shouldn't do it doesn't mean you're above the category of players who stand in AoE because they enjoy seeing all the red numbers. I will always defend people's right to play how they want in the open-to-all mode that DF is, but please for the love of Halone, at least have the decency to stand still or jump around when you're bored instead of making the tank, who is already delayed by your laid back playstyle, have to work harder. It's especially bad in low level dungeons. I get that you like to heal but try to put yourself in others' shoes.

I have sometimes wondered if the game should have a healer that does damage only by converting a % of overhealing to damage. There is demand for a new style in healing and players that would rather do nothing than use their damage spells, so maybe this could fit the niche. They could maybe choose an enemy that takes all the damage they create, and a cooldown that makes 100% of overheals convert to damage for a short time. They could also temporarily convert damage taken to damage done. If their heals were bigger the further they were from the target, all the running around would give something to do between heals. The AoE could be a chain heal that hits 4 unique targets based on distance, which would throttle the amount of overhealing they could put out. Just brainstorming. :P

I would use this class over all others. It has always been my MMO dream to murder things with my heals instead of heal with my murder.

Going into content, expecting that it will cater to your whims, is not the way to go about things. Complain about it outside of the content all you like, but you abide by its demands when you're in it.

Yeah, I think we both agree on this, it just seemed in your initial post that you were against people even speaking out against it, even if they're currently "playing by the rules".
