What amuses me is that the most played races, Miqo'te and Au-ra, are supposed to be rare according to lore. >,>
I have a character for each Job. What determined it for me was mostly the enjoyment of the Job and FC I got into, and the running animations.
My very first character was a Femroe Hellsguard because I liked their characteristics (esp the nose) but some of the running animations for the bigger races are a bit... unfortunate.
I had a small handful of alts for every female race except Lala and Duskwight, plus a male Sunseeker. All but the Miqo'te and Midlander slowly got deleted.
I played my Sunseeker girl for a bit before rolling one on another server, then another until I got dropped the game for about a year.
When I came back in HW I decided to try Au-ra on another server since my servers were locked. My Au-ra NIN began to grow on me as I progressed through MSQ and I got into an enjoyable casual FC so she ended up being my main by default.

I do planned to become male Roegadyn Hellsguard for the tan skintone. I was Sea Wolf but not satisfied with the light green skintone lol.I actually enjoy the "rarity" of the Elezens. It just makes me feel a little different from most, although the "rarest" are the Roegadyn, in particular the Hellsguard. I was surprised to find so few Roes in the world as I thought they would be popular just on size alone. Who doesn't want to be a big bad brute? Apparently not many. Cats & midgets are the norm here.
For story purposes, I just handwave it as:
- Au Ra have all picked up some kind of ninja techniques, and so they've been hiding among us all along and even Eorzean census-takers couldn't find them all.
- Miqo'te breed like freaking crazy.
This.
I also had a few alts to spread out crafting specializations, but I derped hard. I transferred servers with my irl sister so we could play with some irl friends we hadn't known were playing FFXIV too. When the window came up about which characters to transfer I thought it was going to charge me $18 per character... so I just deleted my alts.
It has been explained to me was an incorrect assumption on my part, but well after the fact.
Duskwight Elezen female.
I was torn between the elves and the cats when I started the game. I went elf because I didn't like the Miqo'te starting gear. I've stayed Elezen because I love the emotes and being tall.
I have a few alts I play now and then for fun though (female lala, male miqo'te, and a female miqo'te).
Midlander female.
She's based on my Summoner Alt from another game, where I created a short dark haired female, to contrast my Tall Blond male main which is based in part on myself.
My character was a Miqo'te (Keeper of the Moon) female from when I started until like a month ago or so. I wanted to play Au Ra now so I changed to a Raen Au Ra. But my character is still small and her hair, eye and skin color are almost the same as before. I really liked my Miqo'te, but I like the Au Ra poses and most of their emotes more.
I chose to play as a female character because I have more fun dressing up a female character as I'm female irl too.
When I first created my character I wasn't sure if I should play Midlander Hyur or Miqo'te. The other races weren't an option because they are either too tall or too small and I wanted a character that's only about 150-155 cm tall. I also wanted more of an anime like look. I picked Miqo'te then because I really like their ears and tails. ^^
