Tips for someone wanting to get into Frontlines?

So I've played this game for a couple of years but have never touched PVP. Recently, though, I have wanted to try out frontlines, though I know there are a lot of important differences between PVE and PVP that I don't know about. I wanted to ask what those are and any other tips before I do go in.

I plan to mainly play AST (since my main healer, SCH, apparently has issues in PVP) and MCH in frontlines so any job specific tips for those would be nice as well. Thank you

I hope you mean find a linkshell for people to Frontlines with.

If you are saying something more along the lines of "go away and look for a linkshell in-game to give you tips instead" then you can just get out.

(On mobile so cant edit) Sorry if I sounded rude but responding to someone asking for tips with something that can sound along the lines of "go bother a linkshell for tips. Dont bother us" can feel kind of rude too. Sorry if I misinterpreted your post a bit. It's late and Im a bit sleepy atm

Hey there, welcome. It's nice to see a new player interested in PvP.

Answering your question isn't easy — or it's not fast, at least — because FFXIV has a lot of substantial differences between PvE and PvP, some more subtle or detailed than others, but all important. You'll get better answers when players here have more time to catch up and type longer replies.

Until then, here's some other good ways to prep yourself:
    • Look up YouTube videos of Frontline matches to begin to understand the general flow and mechanics of the field (right now you want Shatter, since that's the only mode that will pop consistently because it's the newest).
    • Check the wikis (both GamerEscape and ConsoleGamesWiki versions) for 'PvP', 'Frontlines', and follow links around from there to get a crash-course on the basics, as well as information on your PvP abilities.
    • Read through the threads on this PvP forum, filter out all the doomsaying, salt, and "Remove GC restrictions" spam and you'll find a lot of good tips and discussion (the Shatter and Feast threads especially contain some good tactical tips, but there are other useful threads like the one about PvE vs. PvP Raise).
    • Search the FFXIV Subreddit for posts like 'Frontlines', 'Shatter', 'PvP', etc. Again, filter out the salt and frustration and you can find some good tips and tactics.
    • Let everyone know you're new when you first load into a Frontlines match. Someone will usually be nice and start offering tips. Ignore any salty vets who say something useless (it's PvP, expect salty vets).
    • Ask around in-game (in /shout or in a Party Finder advertisement) for any PvP-oriented statics or Linkshells that are interested in training a new player. In-game guidance can be the most responsive and useful help, since they can play with you and observe in real-time what you need to know.
Most of all, remember that the best way to learn PvP is to just dive in, try it, and get your bum flattened repeatedly — there's definitely general tactics to know, but no amount of discussion can quite prepare you for the on-the-fly thinking required vs other players.

Sch is amazing in pvp, especially frontline.
