Samurai is probably fits the tank shoes more than the DPS one. The Final Fantasy XI Samurai had something that would define it: Kamae (stances). Different stances would allow one to go on the offensive or be ready to receive an attack. There are like a douzen different stances, but it generally comes down to a certain degree of offensive-/defensive purpose. DPS roles in Final Fantasy XIV can't really, well, tank. Take the dragoon as example. "Best" armor as a DPS role and has access to Foresight and their own traited Keen Flurry. But this doesn't allow them to tank anything that doesn't hit like a wet noodle.
I want Samurai DPS more than tanks. Im already salty that DRK became a tank, and i feel we need another Close Range melee DPS. Plus, More tank classes isn't going to mean more people will tank. Less people tank right now because tanking is awful if you're not used to it from years of experienced.
I leveled warrior to 50 and hated every second of it. Pugs are HORRIBLE people if you're a new tank.
This would require some amount of player skill.
You would see tons of Samurais that just think he's cool run around, most people would not be able to play him.People would complain, square enix would "nerf" him and we'd get another 1-2-3+def cooldown tank

But that was also because the director of the game has said both that he wants Samurai as dps and he doesn't want yet another sword/slash based tank.Samurai was originally intended to be the tank for heavensward but they changed it to dark knight instead. Now the question it comes down to, is did they scrap the idea entirely? Or did they shelve it to work on it later? I don't know if they would just scrap it, I lean more towards the idea of them setting it aside to work on it later.

The director of the game has said that when he pictures a samurai in his head he sees a robe wearing idiaido master and not an armored samurai and that naturally that lends itself more to the idea of it being a dps (no armor).
And he has said no such thing about not wanting another sword/slashing tank so back that up with a source.

Speaking of backing up with sources, where is yours? The director of the game has said that when he pictures a samurai in his head he sees a robe wearing idiaido master and not an armored samurai and that naturally that lends itself more to the idea of it being a dps (no armor).

On another note about samurai; the typical Samurai seen on battlefields did wear plated armor. The samurai-armor in particular was designed in a way that wouldn't hinder them in any way to perform kenjutsu and provided sufficient amount of protection without weighing down the wearer. Unless you're referring to the ronins or shinsengumi. Which are both a different story and stereotype than the typical Samurai

I'm still looking on the sword quote, I saw it referenced in a new job talk on another forum and it could have been a player complaint dressed up as dev talk. Anyway, the robe-clad Swordsmaster wielding katanas is a staple of Ivalice games that XIV is more tied to than other entries so there is some weight to that.
Could have been extrapolated from this -
"In terms of how fans reacted, it makes me think ‘so if we were to put in a Samurai, how is it going to play into the realm of Final Fantasy XIV? Would it be a tank? But that doesn’t seem to make sense because Samurai seems to be more of a DPS. Or if we were to go in the vein of a tank, wouldn’t it be a Shogun?’ "

I actually tanked on my Sam in XI. While it wasn't efficient, I put all applicable tanking gear on sub /war and XP pty on slightly lower level mobs. It was early AM hours and no real tank LFP, so everyone agreed. It was really fun! But for XIV I hope they make it a crazy dps, as I'm PLD, and WHM, but no dps class leveled yet.
