I didn't mind being a Roegadyn, but I didn't feel I looked right as anything but a WAR, least of all my now-iconic Dalamud Red Chaos suit. (Also I totes woulda died of testosterone poisoning during the WAR 50-60 quest. The 60 quest was like... not your garden variety sausage-fest... it was like Oktoberfest. Yeah, let's go with that.)

Now if only I could get a couple more Mariner Cotton Cloths... and if only the dyeable Survival Shirt wasn't a Master Weaver III recipe... *goes and cries in a corner*

Oh, good. balance is restored at last! (Now please go back to preferring DRK, or at least convince me that as a former NIN main you remember the suffering of having to Dancing Edge with a WAR in the party...)

For gameplay reasons, I'd say going GLD and starting in Ul'dah would be ideal for a player wanting to go DRK, since Provoke and Convalescence are essential cross-classing for all tanks. Also saves you from having to level MRD until way later (or never, since Foresight + Bloodbath only takes up to level 8).

Lore-wise, Limsa Lominsa is the gold standard for "immigrating to Eorzea" headcanons, I suppose, but seeking fame and fortune as a Gladiator before taking up the mantle of Paladin still has a nice ring to it. And not just because that's what I did at 2.0 until the urge to twin-dagger became unbearable...

I mean I still play DRK, and will keep it as my best-outfitted class and do the MSQ as it... but for funsies I'm enjoying WAR more. For now. Let's see how long the novelty lasts.

Ahem... I would usually Dancing Edge anyway, cuz y'know, not always gonna be a WAR.

Ohh I can probably get the shirt and pants made easily enough by acquiring the cloth and clusters myself (depends on the cost of Pellitories); I'm just livid that people are trying to charge 2 million gil for a godsdamned t-shirt and cargo pants. Seriously, does money literally grow on trees in this game or summat?! I've got 1.5 million gil and can't even afford a freakin' t-shirt!

... the other is just a matter of patience, of which I have a nigh-on infinite amount. Well that and luck, and if my pulls from Magic packs are any indication, I have pretty insane amounts of that. As long as the thing you need luck to obtain is inconsequential, anyway.

    EDIT
Nope, can't afford them even making all the materials save the Pellitories myself. 200k+/per and need 6 comes out to around 1.2m, and I have just shy of 1.5m. Saving it for housing. (Though hopefully selling a high-end crafter materia will help...)

You think having OCD in an MMO is bad? Try Schizoid Personality Disorder. I couldn't get the Pellitories myself even if I chanced on an Aquapolis portal... >.<

    EDIT EDIT
Ahahahaha! I got them! Now I'm fashionable!

Late to the party, but I would personally recommend starting in Ul'dah purely so that Thancred is the first Scion you meet. You'll also get a firsthand introduction to political corruption and scheming, which is always a plus.

I guess part of what's making it difficult is that both cities have such unique cultures, but neither seem to really jibe with the Xaela. Ul'dah has a colosseum, but seems more driven by greed and cheating than honor, and Limsa Lominsa is a pirate city, all the way to how they speak. Limsa is a bit more rugged of the two, although Raubahn is definitely the embodiment of a "warrior" (haven't since him since 2.55, actually interested to see how he has been affected). Plus, the outlying cities in Thanalan are more tribal, but those closest to Ul'dah use a lot of technology.

... because all Au Ra are immigrants or refugees. You aren't going to find a city-state that is exactly like living on the Othardian steppe was because we're not on the Othardian steppe anymore. As an immigrant or refugee, you're going to have to adapt to the culture to some extent, and none of the city-states have the same culture as native Xaela do.

... I mean, if you really wanted to, you could say you are going to join a pirate crew in Limsa... those are kinda like tribes, yeah?

And "Xaela Culture" really does depend on what tribe of Xaela your character is going to belong to. Sure, a lot of them carry similar aspects to each other, but there are a more than a few that depart significantly from that (and in a variety of ways). Have you decided on a tribe yet?
