    Regula van Hydrus [SPOILER Discussion]

WARNING: If you have not completed 3.0 and beyond you may want to avoid this thread.

    On Topic:
So it has been sometime since Regula van Hydrus was introduced into the Main Storyline. What is your opinion of him?

My opinion of him is that he feels like the Opposite of Gaius Van Baelsar.

His loyalty is to the Garlean Emperor but Gaius loyalty is the Garlean Empire.

Not to mention a bit more single minded on his own ideals.

I just don't have much of a good opinion on this guy as he is basically the blindly loyal Soldier antagonist while at the same time is trying to take Gaius Van Baelsar's place in the Main Storyline. A Role that can never truly be taken over.

He does come off as extremely bland in that sense, also unlike Gaius he doesn't appear to be very threatening overall.

He's a discount Gaius, and it makes me wish he felt the same way about Gaius that Nero felt about Cid, just so someone could taunt him about how he isn't nearly as good as Gaius was.

That said if he ISN'T dead by the end of the Triad storyline, that means he will almost certainly go insane with power cause thats when he'l truly turn into a Kefka expy. Which we'll see how close he is too Kefka, maybe he'll end up nothing like him...maybe he will. Nael ultimately wasn't the same as Seph despite being an expy so there is a good chance we'l get a different character just with recognizable circumstances.

Unukalhai specifically mentioned warriors of the past wielding primal/eikon power and slowly becoming like them to the point where they needed to feed on aether. In my opinion, that would be more interesting to see, Regula wanting to become a primal in service to the empire and we're forced to put him down as a result. I don't believe the empire is above fighting fire with fire.

Although the other aspect of Regula is him mentioning the importance of the empire controlling the Primal/Eikon threat. So it's my sincerest hope that despite the power offered he fights as hard as he can to stay "human" and sane no matter what sort of power he takes in. I believe that would actually make him most interesting, that his dedication and loyalty is so strong that he maintains himself no matter what.

Though we have yet to learn that this "Genesis Expression" is yet it would not be a surprise it is some kind of Allag magitek that can empower a person with a power of a primal into their weapon

We already seen how Regula's Gunblade uses Magitek to harness basic magic energy for his Ultimate attack.

I like him quite a bit. His loyalty to his homeland, his people and the Emperor is very refreshing and I hope that he remains loyal instead of becoming another bland defector or traitor. As much as I liked Gaius it's hard to ignore the number of biased fans who fawn over him even after he ceased being relevant to the story. Final Fantasy games have a long history of creating interesting antagonists - and I always preferred the likes of Gabranth (FF12) and Rufus (FF7) to many of the franchises protagonists.

That we have fought Regula three times and haven't killed him is actually pretty refreshing when one considers the ridiculous amount of plot armour that surrounds the Warrior of Light and their key allies.

The lore team are doing a great job at building him up - just like what they're doing with the Warrior of Darkness and Elidibus. I suspect the pay off will be rather satisfying - and hopefully morally complex.
