    Tier V materia is great.

Tier V Primary Stat materia is awful.

In all but a few cases ANY piece of gear you equip is gonna have plenty of Primary Stat. So INT V, DEX V, and so on are pretty much as much junk as Thunder resist V or Wind resist V. Arguably even moreso.

There are some exceptions: Tanks are wise to meld STR materia to VIT accessories, as it has a greater impact on their damage than Crit or Det. In some cases, healing jobs may want to meld VIT to accessories when taking on challenging raids for the first time, as survivability is very important for them.

For the most part, though, primary stat materia is junk. You should focus on melding Crit, Det, and possibly Skill Speed.

So for instance, tanks can meld STR on Fending accessories because the main stat is VIT, but that can't increase VIT. Use this site to help determine what materia you can meld, and this one for BiS materia melding. Much easier since I don't know SMN melds off-hand.
This should really help out a lot. Thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I'm aware if the piece of gear you wish to add Materia too has for example: 85 Dex 40 Det 36 Acc and 36 Crit, isn't it that you have to add Materia that is a stat that is not one of those. Like, in that example, I would add Skill Speed because it's not already on the gear. Have I been doing it wrong? ø.Øa

I'm not unhappy with my current melds, but if anyone would like to take a look at my gear and provide any advice it can only help me to improve!

not always. If lets say crit isn't capped on that piece of gear you are able to meld a IV or V to it. second materia would then return as crit+0 for example and you could then add det or skill speed in the 2nd slot. Not sure how it works with the npc since I have all crafters maxed, but you can just go and right click your gear -> meld, select materia and now in that new window, you can see if that stat is applicable or not. Or you could as mentioned just use the gear calculator

Best bet beforehand to plan out your melds
    Ariyala Gear Calculator
This way you know exactly what to get and meld
I love V materia even if it's just a few points above IV

Edit: just noticed someone else already posted the site, aw well. You must check it out then
