What Is The Point of Level 5 Materia?

When Materia Melders in the cities were introduced, I was thinking that it would be a great way to enhance my Level 60 gear that could take Materia. While I have been able to make use of Level 4 Materia for my gathering and crafting gear, I can't add Level 5 Materia to my Item Level 230 gear because it always says that the "item level is too low" and if it is applied to my gear there will be no stat boost whatsoever.

So knowing that I can't use Materia in gear that is supposed to be compatible with Materia, I have to ask, why give us something that we can't use?

What materia are you using and on what gear? Most end game gear have a cap on certain stats, so materia won't push it any further.

Most end game gear has a cap on certain stats, so when you try to boost those stats you will find that the item level is too low for the stat to be boosted further prompting an error return. If you use a different stat then it will apply.

Crafting and Gathering gear currently goes up to i190-i195. Grade V Materia can only be put into items i160 and higher. Therefore you cannot meld i150 Chimerical Felt and Serpentskin sets with Grade V materia.

If an item is i160 or higher, and has an open Meld slot, you can put any relevant Grade V materia you want into it; even if it'll raise the stat by 0, you will not get an "item level too low" message. Just red text showing a stat increase of +0. ie. Strength +0. It still let's you meld it if you want though.

Could you be more specific on what you're trying to meld, onto what piece of gear?

Everything has a cap on stats. On left side pieces the main stats will be capped by default (vit + whatever stat is used by that class, such as str, mnd, etc), along with one secondary stat (the highest one). So you can't add more str onto a drg chestpiece, for example.

I don't use the meld npcs myself since I have all crafters at 60, but I just asked a friend and they said you can meld tier Vs onto gear just fine with them...

I know the issue. I have tried melding an Int V materia to my i230 Grimoire... It would give absolutely nothing and I wound up selling the darn thing on the MB after discovering that. Did the same for the rest of my gear.

Like TankHunter said above, each piece of gear has set values, some of which are maxed. You can't increase primary stats (STR, INT and etc) on any corresponding gear. So for instance, tanks can meld STR on Fending accessories because the main stat is VIT, but they can't increase VIT. Use this site to help determine what materia you can meld, and this one for BiS materia melding. Much easier since I don't know SMN melds off-hand.

    Heres an example item:

    STR 82. VIT 93.
    Crit 65. Det 40.

    (0) (0) sockets

What this means is you can only put on any stat as high as your highest secondary stat.

So as you can see, STR and VIT are already well above 65.

You could add up to 25 DET. (as a good meld)

or as much Skill speed, spell speed, intelligence, dexterity, etc etc as you wanted.

    Rule of thub....

What ever youre melding, can not exceed the number of your highest secondary stat.

Tbh it can and because of that you can't get the 25 det into your example gear, it should be 22 or 23 at max.

Det is always lower cap than Crit or SS.

E.g. Ikon Ring of Casting has:
    51 int
    32 crit (caps@ 46)
    44 det (caps@ 44)
    0 SS (caps@ 46)

    And that's why I have a 120crit/115det/5ss relic.
