In FFXI the protagonist never spoke and the dialogs seemed a lot more natural...

To me it's not a matter of skipping something by hurrying a scene along, but trying to recall details of a conversation an NPC had six months ago. Some sort of primer, codex, what have you I think would be a great addition.

It's assumed you spoke, e.g when Lilisette asks your name, clearly there had to be a response of some kind -- The same happens in XIV, but in XIV they go more into detail about things, because it's early in the game's life and the lore isn't set compared to XI which had books dedicated to it's lore.

A lot of quests written now are going to be trashed with the v2 (mainly the "7th umbral era" quests), so I guess they're not wasting too much time on them.
But they've said that better quests are coming, starting with job quests in 1.21

I love the writing of FFXIV. The dialogues are worth reading and make me smile. Nearly every NPC is worth talking to once just to see what bit of lore or funny thing they might reveal.

But then again I think the journey is more important than the destination, which seems to be the minority view around here.

I don't think you understand what this topic was meant to say. The dialect and vocabulary is fine. What's not fine is that every time you start a quest, you are presented with an entire novel to read and the only way you're interacting with the NPC is by spamming X to make the text go by faster. What makes that worse is that for most quests, once you get past the initial diatribe, you get very little lore text or anything.

Make the NPCs move around or something, give us cutscenes, change the music or tempo, make us answer questions, or simply shorten the dialog. But after the 5th or 6th paragraph of tangentially important backstory that an NPC throws out on our screen, most of us are just hitting X to get rid of it and reading the summary on the journal page.

Some times the dialogue can be overly long, but I don't think it's inherently written badly. Many of the NPCs have a very grandiose nature about them, it's a fantasy world- it should be expected to some degree.

I would like to see an example given of a quest that XI has done better than XIV (I say XI because it was mentioned in the OP). I fail to see how the delivery is any different.

In XI, most of the sidequests are delivered purely though text, as they are in XIV.
In XI, most of the AF quests are delivered well, with animation and whatnot, as they are in XIV (class quests).
In XI, the main story quests are well done, as they are in XIV.

I don't really see the difference. If you're going to provide an example, provide one with a game where one party cannot speak. I couldn't really understand the correlation to Tactics.

I, personally, prefer the language used in XIV over XI, but like you've said, that is not the topic of this thread.

I will admit, however, that the quest that the OP is based off of could have been delivered better. While technically an optional quest, it is very important quest and could have been a bit more... animated. Perhaps the guy could conjure up a simulation of each monster as he relays them to you. I could make this same argument about some quests in XI, however. They can't all be grand.
