There's a lore reason they give for this. On one of your summoner job quests you attempt to obtain Ramuh Egi, but fail to do so. I forgot the exact reasoning but it has something to do with limits on your aether or something like that.

That's why instead of summoning a new egi, you merely channel the aetheric energy of Bahamut for Dreadwyrm trance.

Speaking of the Ramuh Egi, I wonder why they haven't done the Summoner/Scholar glamour system yet. They keep hinting at it i.e the ruby carbuncle lamp, but I thought it was supposed to be out by now?

It starts rolling out in 3.4. Scholar was not mentioned in the glamour process. I asked in the upcoming letter to the producer (page 2,) so hopefully they'll answer whether sch will be included.

Traditionally they are healers or black mages. Summoning doesn't substantiate the entirety of any summoner's tool kit throughout the series. It's ffxivs rendention of it.
