Character stuck in Ul'dah Tutorial

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I've created two different characters in my first character slot (I deleted the first after encountering this bug), and every time I try to start in Ul'dah (haven't tried to start anywhere else), after I open my journal, my character can't move, select anyone, or do anything (this is immediately after being tasked to approach Ascilia and speak to her). Basically all he can do is stand there. The game is obviously still running as idle animations work, the journal menu still responds (it's the only one unlocked at that point in time), music and sound effects are still going, but my character just can't do anything. If it makes any difference, the quest marker above Ascilia's head stays there. I can't even bring up the in-game support menu to ask for help getting unstuck since it's still grayed out, so I'm asking for help here.

Date & Time: This has occurred since 10/30/11 and continues to present

Steps:
1. Follow the tutorial instructions after the opening cutscene to approach and speak to Ascilia
2. Follow the tutorial instructions to open journal and examine your only quest
3. Attempt to move to speak to other NPCs - this is where I always get stuck
