Idk what a chemist is and have never seen one, so that's why I didn't go with that lol.
And before anyone jumps to any kind of remarks, this is actually my first FF I've played, so yeah.
This would be lag x1000 though. Having to perform a combination in order to cast a simple cure spell would make spellcasting slower, even if you eliminated spell timers. Can you imagine needing to cure bomb a paladin after a tank buster? "Sorry tank, Cure III is a 3-button combo!"
I'm exaggerating, of course, but even a single one-button Mudra shuriken takes longer to fire off than a cure spell you have at your beck and call. So, I have a suggestion for improving your idea. Instead of having forced combinations, make it more open. Firstly, allow your 'runic' spells to be cast singularly as normal. Then, introduce a 'combine' skill which allows you to queue up several runes in a row, which would activate a combination skill.
That way it won't get in the way of normal play, but it can still provide advantages all of its own.

"Mix" is the main ability of the Chemist, which lets it mix ingredients for different effects.
Chemist will be the next healer and it will not be a caster, finally. I revel at the thought of a skill based healer. If you look at what comes next in 4.x, you must be aware that it goes into garlean territory and they are prone to casting magic.
So there will be chemist (healer), red (rune) mage for dps, both from technology of the garleans - and samurai as tank from the resistance.
May I see proof that Chemist will definitely be in 4.0?Chemist will be the next healer and it will not be a caster, finally. I revel at the thought of a skill based healer. So you have no rebuttals besides the "lazy" card. They gave a good counter argument on why your idea may not work and even gave suggestions on how to improve your ideas and the only thing you can come back with is "lazy"? Methinks it's pot calling kettle black when someone doesn't agree with them.
Huh? What're you talking about, it wasn't supposed to be a rebuttal. It was a general statement, if someone doesn't want to use a combination because it's too long for them, then you're just being lazy in that manner of speaking. Why is that a big deal?So you have no rebuttals besides the "lazy" card. I'm not trying to throw back counter arguments and argue with anyone - maybe you are?
Like I mentioned, all I said was that's lazy, which it is. That's why not every class is made for everyone, you pick what YOU want to play. Not that big of a deal.
