At least in Widargelt's case he didn't die in his story or anything and his story wraps up nicely to allow it to be built up even further that introducing him to players who haven't played Monk or seen its storyline shouldn't really cause too many problems. I don't really see any plot holes with him being a more heavily involved character later.

I mean there was dialogue changes in regards to if you had done ARR DRG story or not when you see Estinien again so they'd probably do something similar were the dialogue differs based on if he's a new or already well known individual to your character.

But as the previous poster said there is a ton of inconsistencies with the whole Azure Dragoon kerfuffle.

Whereas the storyline around Widargelt, hasn't really left any gaping plot holes.

Unless they decided to do some silly retcon's of course.
