My free 30 days ended today and I was thinking of getting the 180 day subscription because I heard it was pretty cheap. But according to the mog station it costs about $77 but under 'subscription fee structure ' it says 180 days only costs $12.99. So do I pay 77 bucks or 12? I'd much rather pay 12 bucks...lol. Also sorry if this has already been asked, I couldn't find another topic like this.

The $12.99 you are seeing is just the unit price of every 30 day set that make up that 180 subscription. Since there are 6 sets of 30 days to make a total of 180 days, it is $12.99 X 6 sets or $77.94 for a 180 day subscription.

When i look in the mog station right now, i see 4 options. There are 3 "standard" accounts(allows multiple characters per world and up to 40 overall between worlds), and 1 "entry" option(1 character per world, 8 total). The "entry" option is only available 30 days at a time, the standard option lets you buy either 30, 90, or 180 days. The longer subs lower the cost per month versus the "standard"(from 14.99 each down to 12.99 each), though it is all charged up front. It also accelerates your "veteran rewards", as they give you everything your subscription covers as soon as its paid for. So a single 180 day sub instantly puts you at veteran rank 4, and you wind up with in-game mail rewarding you with 4 minions, a barding, a mount, a free fantasia(re-customize your appearance), and a voucher for a glamour outfit.

It's a tiny discount to encourage you to pay and play more. If you see yourself playing FFXIV for 3 or 6 more months, you certainly should go with those options because it's a "free" $3/$12 if you were going to play anyway.

On the other hand, if you're not yet sure the game will be a keeper on the long term, the price difference for a month is only couple bucks. If you only take separate months at first you potentially save few months sub if you didn't end up staying, while you'd save just couple bucks a month by getting the long one.

Don't forget other options like retainers and whatnot which add an additional cost. If your already have several characters on several worlds the games might already be calculating cost of all the active characters and "billing it"? Ultimately, delete characters you aren't going to play on servers you wont play on. Tip, you cannot send items/gil to characters that are not on the same server. So, if you have storage characters delete them if they aren't on same server.

Having additional characters does not in any way increase the cost. So having few alts just hanging around is in no way detrimental. If people are on the entry level sub they can't even create more alts than it allows. Having retainer services bought from the mog station adds to the monthly cost based on how many additional retainers you rent. Even then, you have the same amount of retainers available to every alt you have. So here too, the number of alt characters does not matter in any way, the retainer monthly cost is the same.

The only cost related to the amount of alts is thus the difference between the entry level sub, and the regular one. There is no hidden costs that start ticking by the amount of alts you have. You could remove alts you don't play to have cleaner log in character list. Also, I guess it's possible to switch to the entry level sub afterwards even if you have had normal before,in which case you need to first reduce the alt amount to meet it's requirements. Even this though is not automatic, switching the sub type to entry level does not happen automatically based on the amount of alts you have.

As for sharing items between your characters, it is very well possible through FC chest, so if you had alts on the same server and they all are in the same FC (your own, or one with some friends) you would be able to move things from one character to another that way.
