Fool Me Twice: How can a monk keep Cid alive?

Twelve times the bloody idiot has died on me! Does Mantra work with an NPC partner? Even taking down the second wave and just whacking on the machine, Cid will whine about the difficulty of being an engineer and then die. Can't heal the bloody idiot directly

I can't remember what quest this is, but I'm guessing you should aggro all the things. Unless the duty is level-synced to 49, try to hit level 50 so you can do Perfect Balance > Rockbreaker spam.

    Thanks but

Last try I decked all the soldiers, first and second waves, and was whacking away on the machine, but Cid was down to 5% health and couldn't get better, died again, "Bloody idiot..." Q: Mantra is supposed to bring a healing benefit to others in your party. But is an NPC ally like Cid a party member?

Cid is not considered a party member no. Only direct heals will restore his HP.

I'm not sure which instance or fight you're referring to, but the only thing I can suggest is if it's just Cid getting decked, tab through the enemies to figure out which ones are aggroed to Cid and prioritize them first. if you manage to rip hate on them from Cid, even better.

After you deploy the smoke signal to lure the Garlean patrol with the Reaper north I believe. That, or the following one protecting Maggie, but I'm sure it's the former.

Let the mobs gather, then do

    Bootshine > Twin Snakes >(Internal Release)> Rockbreaker
    >(Howling Fist)> Arm of the Destroyer > True Strike > Rockbreaker

After this, you should be able to go back to single target. Your AoE is good; it's expensive, but you have Invigorate, and a few rockbreakers in the beginning are worth it so that the things are hitting you instead of Cid. Bloodbath + AoE spam if you need a little healing.
