I can see why you'd think that's what my point was. I didn't really elaborate a lot. I'll just add to what I said: Since you are taming a creature from out of the world, there are much more than 3 archetypes of pets. Sure, there were right and wrong ways to play their class, as far as end game went, but being a job about "pets" it sure felt more like that since there were lots of pets to choose from. Of course the "pet glamour" was a lot more fun but it was a bit deeper than that since most pets had different abilities. I won't deny some people solely picked their pets based on looks! But of course, the serious players picked differently for their main pets. Even between the "correct for endgame" pet choices, there were variations in models of beast you could pick... for instance, usually all of the "cat" types all had similar skills. Even that, which you'd assume we were talking about just "cat glamour" possibly: I can think of more than one game where taming a particular "cat" for instance would yield a rare ability that only that particular one had and no other cats had. However, maybe it was hard to get so even though maybe it was the best, since it was very difficult to track down and catch, even many raiders might not have it... (in wow's case they homogenized all pets cause people couldn't stand someone having something rare that gave them any kind of advantage in raiding even if it was 0.05% dps increase... -_- )
Regarding what the OP was adding to this thread on puppetmaster, I think that would be a excellent way to fix the "pet class" problem. Having a puppet you could put together yourself and have many things added on to it that you could tweak would be a fun pet type of job. It solves the only 3 types of pets problem I indicated above. Granted, 3 pets can be plenty for most. A puppet would give people more of a feeling of a pet being "theirs" as their own character avatar is "theirs" in the same sense. Even if all the puppets looked the same, there is more room for having a personal pet you can tweak (like your character's gear in a sense, even though there really isn't a lot of a choice as far as correct gear choices go in this game). I guess that's what felt impersonal about summoner to me regarding its pets versus other pet jobs in other games. Summoner is a fun job for many though. I don't discount that. I guess the only argument is that summoner's pets really aren't much of a decision/choice as there is usually only on correct answer as far as what pet to use.
