The Red 13 mount they felt wouldn't be a good callout to the earlier FF game because Red 13 was supposed to be an almost extinct species and having heaps of versions of him running around wouldn't work.

Well, his species could be nearly extinct on Gaia but still plentiful on Hydaelyn. I'd think the bigger problem is that it's an intelligent sentient species, so using one as a mount would be slavery.
