Try to befriend people in parties, start there. Every LS I have joined was either through a forum recruit or from members in my party. Same for our recruitment, many of the people we see do well in parties and they get invited. Once in a while we take on shouters but it's pretty rare.

You kind of have to prove yourself in XIV which isn't unlike other mmos it's just that there are far fewer people and LSs in general.

after reading posts I can see everyone's point about not inviting a total stranger. although that's how I got into my social in XI because someone was willing to take a chance on me. I guess I'll try and find one in the world section of the forums.

because the servers are dead, no people in it. iam sure that SE will merge servers when subs come.

I don't know about Figaro or at which time you play, but Lindblum for example is everything but dead.
There are lots of active players at all times of the day.
People just tend to stay in groups and not invite strangers who shout for LS in town.
But really, there are several ways to find a LS other than that:
I found my first LS by just asking solo payers at the camp if they want to do leves and behest together, and we had lots of fun; as time passed we became more and more people, we decided to do it again the next day, and so on..and after a few days we founded our own LS. We invited some friends, etc.

I found my second (American) one by befriending someone here in the official forums, meeting him ingame, doing stuff together and by getting invited by him after a while.

My German LS was the third one, and I found it by just being in a beginner camp, the guild leader was searching for some German speaking newbies to torture..eh..help!..

The first one died after a while, but the American and German one are still very active, we do ingame stuff together but also discuss a lot, became friends outside of FFXIV,and so on.

You see - you just have to take your chances!
If you are in a group and have a lot of fun with a member, ask him about his LS, what it is like, how the people are, and if it's possible for you to join.
Read the LS recruitment pages in the forums, apply, but most importantly TALK to people ingame.
It's always the most direct and best way into a LS, because you get to know the people beforehand.

Don't complain about FFXIV being antisocial and players acting like NPCs in town when you are not willing to behave differently. Most players love to have a good chat with you as soon as you start a conversation.
..and conversations may lead to a LS recruitment xD

Depends on the LS, but most are very open about you doing whatever you want to do with different people.
But really, most are happy they are able to do it with their LS, because it's not easy to find enough people from different linkshells to do the content with and also because you know the people from your LS, because you played together with them before, so it's way easier to do hard content than with total strangers who may not know how to heal/tank/whatever properly

I think part of the reason is because of how unfinished the LS system is right now. You can't kick someone unless they're right in front of you, so if they're an idiot, you have to be able to track them down first and get them to stand still long enough to do it. Also, if they're offline, decided to quit, etc... you can't kick them at all. I was in one LS early on that had to reform 3 times within a couple weeks because of that. So I think that's definitely one reason why people are less willing to pick up a "random shouter in Uldah".

Also, I find that XIV's general community, overall, is a lot less social than XI's. People seem to stick to their LSs and don't talk much outside of that. It's like a collection of cliques, basically. You can run around Ul'dah and see spots with a bunch of people with the same tag up, all in their own little groups.

You used to see that in XI, too.. in L. Jeuno, etc... But you also saw a lot of public chatter as well, which I always found fun because it was often something pretty funny going on. Some kind of funny/ridiculous conversation, some players engaged in some kind of nutty antics (usually Tarus), etc. XIV's community doesn't seem to have quite gotten there. Hopefully it will.

It's awfully strange to be running through a city full of people and see no one talking, except for the odd shout for a party, a LS, etc.

That said... There's another thing I do when looking for a LS that I don't know why I forgot to include in my previous post.. Go to a forum's threads specific to a server or to their Recruitment section (many game-specific forums will have one) and read up which LSs are seeking, and what they're looking for. I'm noticing a lot of LSs are already limiting themselves to people who can fill specific needs for End Game, and still others have requirements of at least level 30 or something, so that helps filter out which ones I would want to join in the first place, or those I'd flat out not "qualify" for.

I find one that sounds interesting/promising, and then look for its leader, or designated officers in-game and talk to them. From there I can tell if it's a great fit - mutually - and I join, or I find it wouldn't be good at all and say "thanks but no thanks".

    For example...

I was looking into one at one point where they emphasized being a 100% social LS, with no arbitrary restrictions on class, etc; that people would help out their lowbies with stuff, they'd arrange group xp sessions, etc. It was all about members helping other members enjoy the game.

When I caught up with that ad's poster, the LS leader, in-game and started talking to him, he informed me that I had to have at least a level 30 character to join. I'm like "Wait.. your post on the forums says "helping lowbies". He says "Well we mean helping current members level their lower level classes. You need to have at least one at level 30 to join". I said "Why is that?" He said "Because we want to be able to do higher level content together and lowbies don't help with that." I said "But you described the LS as being purely social with no arbitrary restrictions. Saying "you have to be level 30" is a pretty arbitrary restriction for a "100% Social LS". He responded, "We're not 100% social, we also do other stuff and for that stuff you need to be at least level 30. Those are the rules. I explain it on the forum post you read."

I informed him that I had the forum post up in front of me as we spoke, that he said nothing about a level 30 level requirement, that it was 100% Social and that he should update his post to more accurately reflect what he was actually looking for, because the post was misleading. A few moments goes by, and then he says "Whatever. There's no excuse not to be level 30 in a couple days in this game. If you can't get 30 in a couple days then you're just lazy and probably wouldn't contribute to the LS anyway. We don't need dead weight. Get level 30 and we'll see if my opinion changes. Latez".

I replied with "Wow that's a pretty harsh judgment to throw at someone you've spent all of 5 minutes talking to".

    He didn't respond anymore.

I never did contact him again, even at level 30. Why? Well, thanks to that short conversation, he'd shown himself to be a judgmental ass who was clearly on a bit of a power-trip. No way I'd want to be in a LS with someone like that.

I did notice later that he updated the forum post to reflect the level 30 requirement, and changed 100% social to "very social".

So... the point of me telling that little story was to illustrate why it's beneficial to talk to people first.

On the other hand, the current LS I'm in I joined in the same manner, and couldn't be happier. Awesome people, laid back atmosphere, they don't exclude anyone (not clique-ish) and are just fun to be around.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the topic of my thread. again I thank everyone for their tips. I'm going to try and be a little more social in game. which can be hard for me at times. hopefully changes come to the LS system soon. I'll also try posting in the world forums and see if I can find a LS.

I can't see anyone being offended by your post. It's a valid question, esp. for someone who isn't quite used to the community and such in XIV.

    I wouldn't sweat it.

For those who are offended by it... I present Steve Hughes
