If you have more than one character then you could purchase a new home on an alt and then relinquish the small house should you prove successful, though even if this seems appealing to you it's important to note that your alt would be seen as the primary owner of the home, so even if you shared it with your main(which I really doubt is even possible), the only way to protect your home from auto-demolition is by logging in on your alt and entering said home every 45 days.

Though in hindsight that might mean you can't even decorate on your main either... hm....

If you can find a friend not seeking a home or who has an alt without a home, you could ask them to buy your old small plot from you for safekeeping. That way, with the 80% reclamation policy, you'd only lose up to 750k whether you get the new home or not and you'll have an insurance policy on your old home if luck doesn't shine your way.
