As it turns out, my suggested method wouldn't have worked anyways. Apparently you can only claim 80% back on your home if the game reclaims it for you after a 45 day period of inactivity; manual relinquishing of the property yields no refund whatsoever.

Not going to happen. I am already going to have to relinquish my existing house prior to patch 3.3 so I can get a larger house that I want. I am going to have to gamble that I can get a new house come patch 3.3. Just wish they would have introduced the move feature this patch along with the new wards. It does not make much sense later on since housing will be gone by then anyways.

I hope they add the feature that our alts can use our mains house too. It sucks big time that we cant share a house with them.
