I am working on Master Crafting. Item I need is Concentrated Spirits of Salt.
Concentrated Spirit of Salt requires 2 Fieldcraft Demimateria III
Fieldcraft Demimateria III requires Concentrated Spirit of Salt.

Is this someone's idea of a stupid joke? I know you can get them from desynth, but this is just the dumbest thing I've ever seen. How can you need 2 of an item to trade for the same item???

You get them from desynth, primarily. And there's many things you can desynth to get them.
You're just looking at it from the wrong perspective, I guess.

The whole point of the NPC offering FieldCraft Demimateria III is if you botch your Master Craft item and make it normal quality. So this NPC is there to help you make up for your losses, not to provide you with your FieldCraft Materia.

The vendor gives you a fieldcraft demimateria III in exchance for an NQ concentrated spirits of salt. You need an HQ concentrated spirits of salt to get the masterbook. This exists so that if you fail to HQ the item you can get one of your demimaterias back. It's just a way to save some money if you screw up.

just buy Fieldcraft Demimateria III from market at least on odin it cost they are really cheap only like 40k each
i have 100x of them at my retainer :-)
you will need a lot of them as mastercrafter, anyway is not worth to unlock the old masterbooks btw

This is not true at all. All of the allagan replica glamour items require old masterbook items.

The platinum ingots, kirimu leather, etc. Are worth a decent amount by themselves as well.

There are plenty of other old masterbook items that are still useful as well.

Buying them even for 40k is way too costy

With desynth you can get ton of them for nothing !

Remember that master book of ALC is require for reset desynth (and it can be sold for a lot of gils)
And food provide by the master CUL book are still good in raid, cost nothing to craft and yield 3 food per craft

I must be blind, but where is this NPC that people are talking about? My friend's just started doing their master book crafts and they've botched a lot....
