I undercut because I want it gone and hopefully someone will buy it from me.

I also undercut -this is mostly in relation to glamour prisms, which have literally no business being as expensive as they are sometimes - because honestly i think people are just being greedy. Why, yes, I do think it's disgusting if I see one person selling stacks of 20 of one prism, all for a total of 200,000 gil or whatever. That's absurd, you should feel bad. And yes I will take an hour or two to gather, craft, and list those prisms one at a time at prices 70% lower...not because I want a profit, but because I hate you.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.

(...like I said, silly example. Though there's plenty like that even with bigger numbers.)
often you will pay more for the teleport to the NPC or the gathering spots than buying it simply from the market board.

ROFL! I feel the same way about certain items and have been guilty of doing the same types of things. Something you can churn out enmasse shouldn't be a 10000% markup but on the other end of that on our server we had a long time crafter who was undercutting the crap out of the Eikon Accessories w/in like a week of release and I wanted to punch him about his head!

I usually look at the lowest price the item has sold for in the history and sell it for that amount provided I am still earning some gil. I don't care what other people currently have it listed for. My goal is to get players who might just be browsing to see that my price is as good as it gets and buy it right then. I'm no saint, but I also feel good about not charging 1M gil for something that cost me almost nothing to make.

There is a special place in hell for those people.

I don't mind undercutting. We all do it, but when I see an item I had up for 90k get undercut by 30k or more. I want to smack them so hard. There isn't anything do be done about it though, sadly. Part of me wishes the devs would only allow undercutting in increments of say, 1,000 or less. Maybe up that based on how much the item is currently being sold for.

As has already been stated in the thread, there's absolutely nothing to get upset about in the first place.

If the market supports a 90k price, then this seller is hurting ONLY theirself. Their item will sell quickly, and the market will return to normal. The seller is harming ONLY themself.

If the market does NOT support the 90k price, then this seller has seen the writing on the wall and has listed for a price the market will support. You're better off lowering to match, and if you don't and the market leaves you behind, you have only yourself to blame. It's not the fault of the undercutter; they're just a better seller than you.

No individual player has enough influence to change market prices. Undercutting does not harm a market in any way.

I actually reward those sellers who've been undercut by 1gil. If give the choice between an item that's for sale for 100g, and one that's selling for 99g, I will buy the 100g. I know it's a minor thing, but I chose not to reward undercutters.

That works better in theory then practice. More often than not those who undercut by a massive amount set the new price standard because other impatient people undercut them, be it out of spite, a desire to sell or both. I've had plenty of markets sell at fairly high prices consistently only to abruptly change because of one undercutter. So yes, undercutters can influence a market.

Undercut me by 1 gil = my setting my price at half of yours! That may get me hate tells but come on 1 gil? This is a market board not a petty board.

There's a certain crafter on my server, that apparently thinks he is the ONLY one who deserves to be able to sell the HQ i170 crafted main/off hand tools. He will list these items after you have listed yours, and undercut every 10-15 minutes. He did the same thing on an Orchestration scroll I had listed, which resulted in the selling price of the two scrolls dropping from 450,000 down to the mid 200s.
