If you want to squeeze as much dps as you can out of that DRK, you would like to wait for slashing debuff and/or Trick Attack and/or MCH's debuff.
Thou using unmend > plunge is natural and absolutely fine.
Until Boss first attack is Cone AoE to the MT, then it's not advised to use plunge becuase of that 0.8 delay after usage.

I believe they mentioned it in the last live letter where they also announced the Yo-kai Watch collab event.

Dragoon is basically a Monk for Dummies IMO. So I wouldn't feel bad. But as a BLM and DRK guy I can feel your lack of utility but you have to consider that the fact you have traited Mantra is a good thing to have.
