Level-5 lately has been known for franchises made for kids that also appeal to adults' sense of nostalgia, though Akihiro Hino was also the producer and director for the last few single-player Dragon Quest games, which are games for adults made to look like they're for kids. I'm seeing this as an attempt to reach out to players who were fans of his earlier stuff, but drew the line at elementary-school-targeted stuff like Youkai Yo-kai Watch.

Considering Akihiro Hino is CEO, founder, and creative director of Level-5, and Yoshi-P got promoted to the Board of Directors after Heavensward, the approval process probably amounted to going out for beer and arranging a playdate for their brainchildren. That's the Power of Friendship at work.
